Acadia SWCD

Acadia SWCD In 1945 the Acadia Soil and Water Conservation District was formed. Each Soil & Water District has a governing body of local people, elected or appointed.

In response to national concern over mounting erosion, floods and the sky-black dust storms that swept across the country, known as the โ€œDUST BOWLโ€, the Soil & Water Conservation Districts were created. There are over 3,000 soil and water conservation districts throughout the United States, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands & Guam. Districts are re

source management agencies, coordinating and implementing resource and environmental programs at the local level in cooperation with federal and state agencies. Conservation Districts were created to work with land managers, local government agencies and other local interests in addressing a broad spectrum of resource concerns which include erosion control, flood prevention, water conservation & use, wetlands, ground water, water quality and quantity, nonpoint source pollution, forest land protection, wildlife, recreation, waste water management and community development. In 1938, the Louisiana Legislature established the State Soil and Water Conservation Committee and authorized it to work with local farmers to establish local conservation districts. Today, the Soil Conservation Service, known as the Natural Resources Conservation Service, the State Soil and Water Conservation Committee, known as the Louisiana Soil and Water Conservation Commission, and Louisianaโ€™s 44 Soil and Water Conservation Districts all serve the landowners of Louisiana. The Acadia Parish SWCD has five district board members as follows: Gerard Frey-Chairman, Glenn Simon-Vice-Chairman, Robert Dale Thibodeaux-Secretary-Treasurer, Earl Garber-Supervisor and George Guillory-Supervisor.

Donโ€™t let your cows wish they were in your neighbor's pasture!

Proper pasture management ensures that your livestock receive the highest quality nutrition while maintaining the health and productivity of your land. In addition to grazing and fertilizing, consider implementing rotational grazing practices to prevent overgrazing and allow for regrowth. Regular soil testing can assist your fertilization program to meet the specific needs of your pasture, ensuring optimal forage production. If youโ€™re introducing new forage species, itโ€™s a good idea to mix varieties that have different growth patterns and nutrient profiles. This not only maximizes the nutritional benefits for your cows but also improves pasture resilience to varying weather conditions. Remember, healthy pastures contribute to healthy livestock. By investing time and resources into proper pasture management now, youโ€™re setting the stage for a productive and sustainable grazing season that will benefit both your animals and your land for years to come.
