๐Ÿš‘ It's National EMS Week 2026! ๐Ÿš‘

This week, we celebrate the dedicated professionals who answer the call when seconds matter most. With roughly 72% of our calls being EMS-related, our medical training is the backbone of how we serve this community.

A few things we're proud of:
๐Ÿ† Defending our title for fastest EMS Arrival-to-EKG time in our hospital system (pictured!)
โค๏ธ A record 58-minute first-medical-contact-to-reperfusion time on a 2025 STEMI patient
๐Ÿ“š Trained 1,000+ community members in CPR and deployed 8 new AEDs last year
๐Ÿš’ Every full-time member is required to be a certified firefighter and a licensed paramedic

Our EMS capabilities span day-to-day prehospital care, tactical (SWAT) paramedics, EMS educators and preceptors, and Mobile Integrated Health paramedics working to prevent emergencies before they happen.

We also continue investing in the tools that save lives. Last year brought new cardiac monitors, AEDs, cots, stretchers, and CPR devices. In 2026, we're adding a new ambulance and modern video laryngoscopes to the fleet.

To our paramedics and EMTs: thank you for what you do every single shift.

On the final day of โ€œDive Week,โ€ divers focused on sonar imaging, learning how to interpret underwater images and identify objects in challenging environments.

Sonar technology is a valuable tool during underwater search operations, helping divers locate both small and large objects more efficiently and, in some cases, reducing search times during emergencies.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to Dive Right In Scuba for their support and sponsorship throughout the week. Their partnership helped make this training a success, and we are fortunate to have them as our dive shop.

We would also like to thank Aurelio's Pizza for providing lunch today.

Finally, we are incredibly grateful to all of the department divers who participated in this week-long training: Merrillville, Cedar Lake, Hobart, Monticello, Michigan City, Portage, Lansing, East Hazel Crest, Markham, Oak Forest, and MABAS 24.

Thank you to everyone who helped make Dive Week a success.

Day 4 of โ€œDive Weekโ€ focused on recovery operations.

Divers trained on the rigging and recovery of submerged vehicles, building the skills needed to safely and efficiently conduct complex underwater recovery operations.

The team also worked on victim recovery techniques with an emphasis on professionalism, dignity, and discretion throughout the process.

We would like to thank 1-800-BoardUp NW Indiana for providing lunch for our divers today.

Last week was Arson Awareness Week, and while we missed sharing some content with you, we certainly haven't missed our favorite accelerant detection canine, Sophie! In fact, she just celebrated her third anniversary working for CPFD.

Trained in Maine, this talented black lab now serves the northern third of Indiana. She works not only here in Crown Point but also alongside other local fire departments, the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS), and the Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms, and Explosives (ATF).

Sophie's incredible nose helps fire investigators detect ignitable liquids that may have been used to start a fire. While the term "arson" specifically refers to criminal activity, Sophie's skills are put to use on accidental fires as well.

Cheers to Sophie and her handler, Division Chief Todd Bennett, for the important work they do across the Region to investigate fires and put criminals behind bars!

Day 3 of โ€œDive Weekโ€ centered on rescue operations and real-world problem solving beneath the surface. Training scenarios included victim rescue in and around submerged vehicles, search and rescue operations utilizing the AquaEye handheld sonar device, and emergency rescue procedures for downed divers.

A big thank you to American Structurepoint for providing lunch and supporting our team throughout the day.

Weโ€™d also like to thank StretchLab for stopping by and giving our divers some much-needed recovery and stretching work after a long day in the water.

CPFD is responding to multiple reports of a natural gas leak in the area of Joliet St. and Harrington Ave. NIPSCO crews are on site working to repair the leak. A steady north wind is helping disperse the gas, and there is no immediate hazard. However, a noticeable odor may be present in areas south of the leak. This includes areas around the Fashion Terrace neighborhood.
