Crown Point Fire Rescue Canine Unit

Crown Point Fire Rescue Canine Unit CPFR Canine Unit is a specialized canine search and rescue team. Contact Lake County Dispatch for mission requests. 219-660-0001 K9 Jake and his handler Ryan specialize in finding live victims in an emergency.

This could include buildings collapsed by an earthquake or tornado. The specially trained dog can use his powerful nose to locate people so rescue teams can get them out. Jake can also locate people that are missing or lost in a specific area. The canine unit is part of a greater regional search and rescue effort. The 5-county "District 1 USAR Team" depends on state and grant funding. In order to maintain this "USAR" rating, the team needs a canine search resource to locate victims in disasters.

Thank you for the support, Maddox! 🍋🐶

We wanted to thank our local resident Maddox for stopping by the Fire Department today and giving Lieutenant Ryan Cusack and his k-9 partner Jake a donation! Maddox decided to have a lemonade stand back in June and wanted to donate the funds to “Jake the Fire dog” so he can protect the citizens of Crown Point. Maddox, we thank you for thinking of us and dedicating your time in hosting a lemonade stand to support our efforts to protect the citizens of Crown Point!

High humidity and high temps make it hard for our furry friends to cool down. Know some early signs of heat stress which include: elongation or cupping of the tongue (pictured), shade seeking, and refusal to engage or return a toy to you during play.

We intentionally exercise during these conditions to remain mission ready. It’s controlled, closely monitored, and fresh water is available along with other cooling measures. Be safe in the heat and don’t forget to keep an eye on your four-legged friends.
