Crown Point Fire Rescue Canine Unit

Crown Point Fire Rescue Canine Unit CPFR Canine Unit is a specialized canine search and rescue team. Contact Lake County Dispatch for mission requests. 219-660-0001

K9 Jake and his handler Ryan specialize in finding live victims in an emergency. This could include buildings collapsed by an earthquake or tornado. The specially trained dog can use his powerful nose to locate people so rescue teams can get them out. Jake can also locate people that are missing or lost in a specific area. The canine unit is part of a greater regional search and rescue effort. The

5-county "District 1 USAR Team" depends on state and grant funding. In order to maintain this "USAR" rating, the team needs a canine search resource to locate victims in disasters.

K9 Jake and handler Ryan Cusack recently returned from North Carolina where they were deployed with Indiana USAR Task Force #1 in response to Hurricane Florence. After riding out the storm with winds exceeding 100 mph, they were immediately put to work helping residents in the Wilmington area while nearly 30" of rain continued to fall.

Thank you Mayor David Uran, Fire Chief Dave Crane, Crown Point Fire Rescue members, and all those at home who have supported this program from the very beginning and throughout this most recent deployment. We will post more videos and news stories in the days to come, recapping the events and our team's involvement.
