Our crews are officially three weeks into cleaning up following the Aug. 11 derecho.

The areas highlighted in teal on this map have been cleared at least once. The areas highlighted in pink are active work areas. Crews have cleared 118 loads of chips and 1,894 loads of brush.

Clean-up is ongoing; if we have not been to your subdivision inside City limits, please know you are on our list! If you live in unincorporated Lake County, please contact the Lake County Highway Department to remove your brush.

In case you missed it:
• Clean-up continues. Our crews along with two third-party contractors will continue to remove debris across City limits.
• Residents who sustained disaster-related damages may now be eligible to apply for FEMA Individual Assistance. Residents can apply for assistance through FEMA by calling 1-800-621-3362 or visiting DisasterAssistance.gov. Please note, there is no cost to apply for FEMA assistance.
• If you haven’t done so yet, report any storm damages sustained by contacting 211. Relief fund applications can be submitted by calling 211 or online at IN211.org.

Debris Removal Update: Our Public Works Crews are continuing on the removal of the debris piles. City crews are being assisted by third-party contractors we’ve hired to help with the process. The totals so far:

-1,542 loads of brush
-108 loads of chips

Storm Debris Update: A few pictures of the debris piles our public works crews have hauled away and chipped up so far. Admittedly, my pictures do not show just how big these piles are; I’d guess the main wall pile is 40ft high. The crews continue to work 12 hour days and have done a fantastic job for all of us. The construction companies that have donated the use of their large trucks and heavy equipment have been a tremendous help to our public works crews.
But because of the large scope of the storm
damage and debris piles, and to help expedite the removals of them, I have authorized the short term hiring of field related companies to assist in the debris removal efforts. Even with this, the full cleanup effort will be lengthy but the sooner we can get these piles removed, the better.
And a continued personal thank you to all who have and continue to help our community and neighbors. The calls, emails and messages received by the city and Mayor’s Office are very much appreciated. 🇺🇸

I would like to know who posted this! I nor anyone in the City dictates where NIPSCO or their utility contractors go to help. Our city crews have been working their butts off everywhere around our city to get trees and debris removed. These crews have chipped up, loaded trees, removing over 60 full sized dump trucks of debris out of Liberty Park alone since this devastating storm hit. With all of our city employees, and the vast majority of the community and businesses working together and supporting each other posting this crap shows how those with agendas really feel about our city. You want to actually help the rest of us who are working together to restore every area in our city, volunteer to help! For the poster, feel free to call me or stop by city hall to talk with me. You want me to come to your house to talk, give me your address and I’ll be over. Btw, I was back in liberty park today and these same utility crews were working to remove trees off of homes.

This post is extremely concerning.

If what these linemen are telling this resident is accurate, then we need to ask some very serious questions about how storm-recovery crews are being prioritized throughout Crown Point.

Liberty Park residents have been dealing with significant damage, and according to this account, the linemen described the neighborhood as some of the worst damage they’ve seen. If crews are being directed to prioritize other areas over Liberty Park—and comments were made about wealthier neighborhoods receiving priority—that deserves an explanation.

Every Crown Point resident deserves the same level of concern, regardless of their neighborhood or income.

Our city should be focused on getting power restored, helping residents recover, and making sure resources are distributed fairly and transparently.

I’m sharing this because residents deserve answers. Was Liberty Park actually being deprioritized? Who makes those decisions? And what criteria are being used to determine where crews go?

These are legitimate questions, especially when residents are hurting and waiting for help.
