Western Albemarle Rescue Squad

Western Albemarle Rescue Squad Community driven, family oriented, all-volunteer organization serving Albemarle County west of Cville

Western Albemarle Rescue Squad is an approximately 100 member all volunteer Advanced Life Support organization providing rescue and EMS service to the western portions of Albemarle County, Virginia. We are grouped in the Thomas Jefferson EMS Council, which comprises the counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Nelson and the city of Charlottesville. The squad was formed in 1978 by citizens

of the western end of the county in response to a desire for an ambulance which did not have to respond from the city. From that origin, we have grown to an organization which staffs an in-house crew 24 hours a day and provides Basic and Advanced Life Support services to the areas which we cover. We run over 1300 calls per year, including mutual aid with several neighboring agencies. Patients are transported to the University of Virginia Health Systems, Martha Jefferson Hospital or occasionally to Augusta Health in Waynesboro. Don't forget to follows on Twitter

NOTE: The Western Albemarle Rescue Squad does not participate in patch trading.

Happy to be out on the Rivanna River today supporting the Rivanna River Paddle Races. Starting at Brook Hill River Park and ending at Darden Towe Park, the WARS and Albemarle County Fire Rescue water rescue teams patrolled 6.2 miles of river to ensure the safe passage of everyone. No better way to start a beautiful weekend.

Congrats to all the winners and participants! We hope everyone has a happy and safe weekend.

🇺🇸 Memorial Day 🇺🇸

Today, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness will never be forgotten.

As we gather with family and friends this Memorial Day, let us also take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of the day and remember those who gave everything for our freedom.

From all of us at the Western Albemarle Rescue Squad, thank you to our fallen heroes and to the families who continue to carry their legacy forward.

Memorable Moments:

- At morning shift change a local resident called the building in need of unique assistance. The family explained their beloved family dog was hit by a large truck the previous night, and the dog had run away after the incident. They had searched all night and finally found her deep into the woods, and up the mountain bordering the national park. Being a very large dog they needed help to get her down and to the emergency vet. The night crew handed off duties to the day crew and loaded up to the location to rescue the dog. With many hands, the crew was able to locate the dog, utilize a sked stretcher and bring her down. With seamless team work the crew was able to navigate obstacles and scale the mountain terrain all while trying to keep her comfortable. She was loaded into the family car, and her family took her to the emergency vet. They contacted us to let us know that while injured, she was in fact going to be okay and would be coming back home to recover. By far one of our favorite days.

- Another memorable call was bringing an injured person across a river with the water rescue team after a flood washed out their bridge and access to their home.

- Loved being a part of Taylor’s first 5k🏃‍➡️ and the Crozet 4th of July Parade and Festival!
