On a September night in 1893, the little iron town of Mansfield in Iron County saw one of the worst days in Michigan mining history. ⛏️ The Mansfield mine had been worked close beneath the Michigamme River, and when the ground between gave way, the river broke through into the tunnels below. Twenty seven men were lost. The town mourned, then slowly emptied out over the years that followed, until Mansfield faded into the quiet ghost town it is today. More than a century later, folks still stop at the memorial there to read the names and remember them. 🕯️
