The absolute highlight of yesterday's City of Crystal Lake, IL parade for me was passing out candy to children of all ages and shaking hands with neighbors along the route.

It all started with one supporter who raced to the curb, hand extended. Within moments, a beautiful chain reaction began—adults and children as young as four were stepping forward for handshakes and high-fives.

In that moment, I felt like a superstar. But beneath the excitement, I knew these wonderful people were sending me a profound message and a quiet reminder.

It was simply this: “We have faith in you. Please remember us when you make decisions on the McHenry County Board that affect our lives.”

Thank you all for your support and encouragement! I got the message. ♥️

Meet Austin May, candidate for McHenry County Board Member, District 5. It gives me great pleasure to introduce you to Austin, and also to personally endorse him for the County Board. It's true, I've known Austin since he was a child, dating back to when I was one of the early board members of the Spring Grove Storytelling Festival.

This young man is, in a word, amazing. Rather than reinvent my own dialogue, I'll share the following paragraph from my endorsement letter:

"Austin’s entire life has been defined by service to others. From serving as a U.S. Army Captain and earning the Meritorious Service Medal, to teaching in the Peace Corps and helping refugees under the State Department, he has consistently stepped up to meet big challenges.

"Combined with his legislative experience working with local leaders and his Master’s of Public Policy from Georgetown University, Austin possesses a rare and deeply valuable perspective on how to make government work efficiently for the people."

This is an important first step!

Ahead of Juneteenth, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear has posthumously pardoned 43 people who were imprisoned for one reason: they helped enslaved men, women, and children escape to freedom.

The pardons, announced June 15, clear the names of Kentuckians convicted under an 1835 state law that made it a crime to help a person flee slavery - an offense that carried 2 to 20 years in prison. These were conductors and allies of the Underground Railroad, Black and white, who risked everything to move people toward freedom.

Among them is Elijah Anderson, a free Black man remembered as one of Kentucky's most active Underground Railroad conductors, credited with guiding roughly 1,000 people to freedom before he died behind bars. Another is Julett Miles, a Black woman who crossed the Ohio River to try to rescue her own children from being sold. She was arrested and died in prison.

"I am posthumously pardoning 43 brave Kentuckians who were wrongfully imprisoned for helping enslaved people escape to freedom," Beshear said.

It's a symbolic act - the people it honors are long gone. But symbols matter. This is a state formally declaring that the men and women it once jailed as criminals were, in truth, on the right side of history.

Happy St. Patrick's Day and Primary Voting Day coming up in Illinois on Tuesday, March 17! We have several hot elections that are on the ballot, and voters still have time to vote early on Monday, March 16.

I am running for reelection to the McHenry County Board, District 2, and asking for your vote and support once again. A big "Thank You" to all who supported me and trusted me to listen to your views, even when they may have differed from my own. Remember that your voice and your vote matter.
