The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department recently recognized four of its members for exceptional action in the line of duty and off the clock.
On March 28, 2026, Lieutenant Gualdoni, FF/PM Bergstrom, and FF/PM Carreno responded to the 6100 block of Scott Lane for a male experiencing difficulty breathing. While loading the patient into the ambulance, the patient went into cardiac arrest. The crew performed advanced life support measures, including CPR. The crew was able to obtain a pulse. The patient was transported to the hospital and eventually released neurologically intact.
Lieutenant Gualdoni, FF/PM Bergstrom, and FF/PM Carreno received an award from the McHenry Western-Lake County EMS System Cardiac Arrest Committee and received a Life Saving Recognition Award from the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department.
Additionally, another member of the department, FF/PM Bucheger, was presented with a Distinguished Service Award from the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department.
On May 9, 2026, while off duty, Firefighter Bucheger noticed smoke rising from a home while driving. He immediately pulled over to investigate and discovered an active fire at the rear of the residence. After dialing 911, he alerted and evacuated a resident sleeping in a downstairs bedroom. Firefighter Bucheger then utilized a garden hose to help suppress the fire. Due to his situational awareness, quick thinking, and rapid action, life safety was maximized, and property damage was minimized.
Please join us in congratulating these firefighters for their exceptional service! We are proud to have great members like this serving our department and community.
