🚴‍♂️ TIP TUESDAY: E-BIKE & BICYCLE SAFETY ON CRYSTAL ROADS

With beautiful August weather, many residents are hitting Crystal’s trails and streets on two wheels—including a growing number of e-bikes!

The Crystal Police Department wants to share a few quick reminders to keep riders and motorists sharing the road safely:
⚡ Know Your E-Bike: E-bikes travel much faster than traditional bicycles. Always monitor your speed, especially on shared city paths, and yield to pedestrians.
🪖 Protect Your Head: Helmets are strongly encouraged for all riders and are legally required in Minnesota for anyone under 18 operating an e-bike.
🔄 Go with the Flow: Both traditional and e-bike riders must ride in the same direction as traffic and obey all traffic signs and signals.
🚨 Stay Visible: Use a front white light and a rear red light if you are riding during the early morning or evening hours.

Night to Unite 2026 was one for the books! 🥳✨

🚔 Traffic Stop Turns into DWI Arrest After Short Pursuit
Recently, a Crystal Police officer observed a driver pull up alongside their squad car, make an improper turn, swerve, and then proceed through a red light (literally all directly front of a police officer). When the officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the driver chose to flee instead of complying.

The driver reached speeds of approximately 110 mph, creating a significant danger for everyone on the roadway. When the driver realized the officer wasn’t going to just let him drive way, he eventually pulled over and was taken into custody without further incident.

Following the arrest, the driver failed standardized field sobriety tests and later provided a breath sample of 0.19 BAC—more than twice Minnesota's legal limit.

At the Crystal Police Department, traffic enforcement is about much more than issuing citations. Our responsibility is to protect the public by addressing dangerous driving behaviors before they result in serious injuries or fatalities. Impaired driving, excessive speed, and fleeing from law enforcement place everyone at risk, and our officers are committed to taking swift action to keep our roadway's safe.

What can you do to help?
🚗 Never drive after consuming alcohol or drugs. Plan by using a designated driver, rideshare service, taxi, or public transportation.
🚗 If you see dangerous or impaired driving, safely call 911 and provide as much information as possible.
🚗 If you are signaled to stop by law enforcement, pull over safely. A traffic stop should never escalate into a pursuit.

Every safe decision behind the wheel helps protect your family, your neighbors, and everyone else traveling through our community.

🔥 EXTREME HEAT SAFETY REMINDER 🔥
With dangerous heat across our area, the Crystal Police Department wants to remind everyone to take this weather seriously. Extreme temperatures can quickly become life-threatening, especially for older adults, young children, individuals with medical conditions, and pets.

While law enforcement is best known for responding to crimes and emergencies, our mission is also to protect the safety and well-being of our community. During periods of extreme heat, our officers are actively checking on vulnerable individuals, assisting residents in distress, and responding to heat-related emergencies. We are also working closely with our public safety partners to ensure those in need receive assistance as quickly as possible.
Here's how you can help keep yourself and others safe:
☀️ Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water—even if you don't feel thirsty.
☀️ Limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.
☀️ Never leave children, pets, or vulnerable adults in a parked vehicle—even for a few minutes.
☀️ Wear lightweight clothing and seek air-conditioned spaces whenever possible.
☀️ If you see someone showing signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, call 911 immediately.

You can make a difference. Check on your elderly neighbors, family members, and friends. A simple phone call, text message, or knock on the door could save a life. Looking out for one another is what makes Crystal a strong and caring community.

Finally, we'd like to thank our residents, first responders, dispatchers, firefighters, EMS personnel, public works crews, and community organizations who continue to look out for one another during challenging weather. Your partnership helps keep Crystal safe.

MAYOR AND POLICE CHIEF HONOR CRYSTAL 90+ BIRTHDAY CELEBRANTS
On July 24, Crystal Mayor Julie Deshler and Police Chief Brian Hubbard celebrated the birthdays of 10 residents at Calibre Chase Apartments in Crystal who are all 90 years of age or older. Each resident received a certificate and key from the city in recognition of this special milestone.
The honorees were Ada Rivers, Linus Wensman, Merry Dorphy, Opal Byrd, Joyce Jensen, Ruth Modrow, Shirley Scheuble, Della Hanratty, Zana Dahl, and Audrey Nelson.
A special congratulations to Ada, who will celebrate her 101st birthday in August!
