South Milwaukee, WI - At approximately 9:30 PM on Monday, February 16th, 2026 the
South Milwaukee Fire Department responded to a full-assignment structure fire at 3411
S. Chicago Avenue in the City of South Milwaukee. On arrival, responding SMFD units
encountered heavy smoke and fire at the front corner window of the first floor of a 16-
unit apartment building that adjoins 2 additional apartment buildings. Engine 163’s crew
employed a transitional attack; suppressing the flames quickly from the exterior to allow
for advancement into an aggressive interior search and fire attack that contained the
majority of damage to the apartment of origin with limited extension of smoke and heat
to the first floor hallway and apartments and a single apartment on the 2nd floor.

Numerous shared services partners responded to assist, conducting vigorous search of the
three connected buildings and continued fire attack until all residents were accounted for
and the fire was extinguished. SMFD extends our appreciation and thanks to South
Milwaukee Police Department and the Cudahy, Oak Creek, St. Francis, Milwaukee, and
Greenfield fire departments. This partnership between agencies directly contributed to the
successful resolution of this incident. Additionally, none of these resources would be
available to us were it not for the skilled ex*****on of resource acquisition by Oak Creek
Dispatch.

No firefighter or resident injuries were reported. A cat and turtle were located during
search operations. The cat was revived with oxygen via a pet mask and returned to its
owner. The turtle was relocated to a tenable area of the building.

Damage from the fire left the entire structure without power, without heat, and without
fire alarm protection. The apartments cannot be occupied at this time until those
necessities can be restored. The American Red Cross is in the process of rendering aid to
residents of the building. The residents of all 48 occupied apartments are impacted with 7
residents receiving shelter from the Red Cross and the remainder finding respite
elsewhere.

The cause of the fire is under investigation at the time of this release.

Fire is a destructive element, the aftermath of which we would wish that no one need
encounter. Our thoughts are with the residents of this building that are displaced, have
lost lifelong memories, and are tonight without the familiarity of home to provide
comfort.

🚒 Thank You, Kelmann Restoration & the Kelmann Cares Foundation! 🚒

The Cudahy Fire Department would like to extend a sincere thank you to Kelmann Restoration and the Kelmann Cares Foundation for their generous $1,000 grant award. This funding will be used toward the purchase of a new 4-gas monitor, a critical piece of safety equipment for our firefighters.

A 4-gas monitor allows us to quickly detect dangerous atmospheric conditions—including oxygen deficiency, carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, and explosive gases—at emergency scenes. This technology is essential for protecting our firefighters, ensuring safe entry into hazardous environments, and safeguarding the residents we serve.

We are grateful for Kelmann’s continued support of first responders and their commitment to keeping our community safe. Partnerships like this make a real difference. Thank you for investing in firefighter safety and community protection

Thanks to all those who stopped to visit with the Fire Department during National Night Out! Despite the heat, we had many brave children try our mini Keiser Sled, dummy drag, and hose carry. Operating our fire hose was the favorite. Some children even cooled off by running through the fog stream. One girl, pictured below, made it her request to run through the stream with her mother.
