Good morning to all in Cuero and DeWitt County as we experience our first brisk, cool morning of the season.
As the temperatures start to drop, many of us are turning on our heaters for the first time in months or even longer! Here in South Texas, our heaters don’t get used nearly as often, which means dust can build up on the heating elements and coils while they sit unused.
When you turn your heater on for the first time, you might notice a burning or dusty smell. A light, brief odor can be normal as accumulated dust burns off. However, that smell should not be ignored if it persists, gets stronger, or is accompanied by smoke. Excessive dust buildup, nearby combustible materials, or electrical problems can create a fire hazard.
🚒 Before you crank up the heat, remember these heater safety tips:
✅ Clean before use: Remove dust from your heater and vents according to the manufacturer's instructions.
✅ Check your heater: Inspect it for damaged cords, unusual noises, or signs of damage before turning it on.
✅ Keep it clear: Keep furniture, curtains, bedding, clothing, and other combustible materials at least 3 feet away from portable space heaters.
✅ Plug it directly into the wall: Never use an extension cord or power strip with a portable space heater.
✅ Never leave it unattended: Turn off portable heaters when leaving the room or going to bed.
✅ Check your smoke alarms: Make sure smoke alarms are working properly throughout your home.
⚠️ If you notice persistent burning smells, smoke, sparks, or flames, turn the heater off if it is safe to do so. If a fire starts, get everyone out, stay out, and call 911.
A little preparation now can help keep your family, home, and our community safe this fall and winter.
