🥵 COOLING SHELTER OPEN ☀️

Hot temperatures in excess of 95°F are expected today through Friday. As a result, the Darlington Heights Volunteer Fire Department is once again opening our main hall as a cooling shelter for the community.

If you or someone you know needs a place to get out of the heat, cool off, and have some water, please stop by. Everyone is welcome.

During this period of extreme heat, please remember to check on elderly family members, neighbors, and others who may be especially vulnerable to heat-related illness.

Stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity when possible, and take frequent breaks from the heat.

🔥 BRUSH & EQUIPMENT FIRE – ABILENE RD & DARLINGTON HEIGHTS RD 🔥

At approximately 12:17 p.m. today, Prince Edward County dispatched Hampden Sydney Vol. Fire & Rescue (Company 2) and Darlington Heights Volunteer Fire Department (Company 6) to the area of Darlington Heights Road and Abilene Road for a reported out-of-control brush fire.

Law enforcement arrived on scene and reported that an excavator next to a large brush pile was fully involved in fire.

Company 2 arrived on scene first, followed shortly by Company 6. Hampden-Sydney firefighters extinguished the excavator and brush fire, while Darlington Heights personnel provided additional water supply to assist with extinguishment operations.

Darlington Heights responded with two apparatus and seven volunteer firefighters.

For 53 years, this community has shown up and shown out in support of our department. We truly could not continue doing what we do without you.

Like everything else, the cost of operating a volunteer fire department continues to rise. Equipment, apparatus, training, maintenance, fuel, insurance — it all costs more today. That’s why your support matters now more than ever.

We’ve been making changes and investing in our department so we can better serve the residents of our community. 🚒

We are working to:
• Replace outdated equipment
• Expand our capabilities
• Add vehicle extrication/rescue services
• Improve our ability to provide quick response to medical emergencies
• Make sure our volunteers have the equipment they need when YOU call for help

Some of these improvements are still a work in progress, but we are steadily moving forward.

To put the costs into perspective, a set of modern vehicle extrication equipment can easily cost $50,000 or more, and replacing a fire apparatus can cost anywhere from $250,000 to $1 MILLION+.

That’s a huge undertaking for a volunteer department — but with the support of our community, we can keep building a stronger department for everyone.

🚒 Neighbors Helping Neighbors Through Training 🚒

Volunteer firefighters from Charlotte County’s Cullen Volunteer Fire Department teamed up with Darlington Heights Volunteer Fire Department Thursday afternoon for a joint training session.

Firefighters spent the afternoon learning about each other’s apparatus, equipment, and pumping operations. Training together gives our members a better understanding of how each department operates and helps ensure we can work effectively side-by-side when the call comes.

While Cullen serves Charlotte County and Darlington Heights serves Prince Edward County, we’re still neighbors. Emergencies don’t stop at county lines, and there will be times when both companies find themselves working together on the same fire scene. Building familiarity and teamwork before that happens makes everyone safer and more effective.

A special thank you to the Cullen folks for providing dinner for everyone before the training! We appreciate the fellowship, partnership, and commitment to serving our neighboring communities.

Today is Volunteer Firefighters Recognition Day, and we're honoring the dedicated men and women who selflessly serve their communities.

Volunteer firefighters respond to emergencies at all hours, train year-round, and sacrifice time with their families to help others when they're needed most.

To every volunteer firefighter across the country: thank you for your courage, your commitment, and everything you do to keep your communities safe.

Everyone please give a big happy birthday to Brandon Whitehead.

For those that don’t know his company is American Soldier Lawncare LLC.

Brandon is a dedicated member of our department and we know his wife Nicole will spoil him today on his birthday!

At 06:59 15-Aug-26, Darlington Heights Co. 6 firefighters were dispatched as third due to a residential unit at Hampden Sydney College for an active smoke alarm. Firefighters with Hampden-Sydney Co. 2 arrived on the scene first and reported an audible smoke alarm with heavy smoke. Upon investigation, it was determined that the smoke was coming from a malfunctioning AC unit. After determining the source of the smoke was under control, members from Darlington Heights and Farmville Co. 1 deployed high-flow fans to ventilate the structure and remove the smoke.

Darlington Heights Co. 6 provided ( 8 ) volunteer firefighters and ( 3 ) apparatus to the scene.
