This week kicks off a brand new school year, and the Cullman County Sheriff's Office is proud to welcome our incredible students, dedicated educators, and hardworking staff back to campus!

We're especially excited to see our School Resource Officers (SROs) back in the schools—serving not only as protectors, but as mentors, role models, and friendly faces in our schools. Their presence is a vital part of building safe, supportive learning environments across the county.

This week, our School Resource Officers (SROs) took part in extensive training to ensure they are prepared to protect and serve the students, faculty, and families in our schools.

Our SROs completed fi****ms training, active shooter response training, and important legal updates. Training like this is critical to keeping our deputies prepared for the challenges they may face while serving in our schools.

Sheriff Matt Gentry stated, “I could not be more proud of our SROs and the dedication they show every day. They take their responsibility of protecting our children very seriously, and they continue to train and prepare themselves to be the best deputies they can be. Our children deserve the very best, and we are committed to providing that.”

On August 2, 2026, deputies with the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office were conducting routine patrol when they initiated a traffic stop in the area of County Road 437.

During the traffic stop, the driver was identified as Daffney Matline Sims. After developing probable cause to search the vehicle, deputies located approximately 4 ounces of a substance that field-tested positive for fentanyl.

Sims was arrested and charged with Trafficking in Fentanyl and transported to the Cullman County Detention Center.

Sheriff Matt Gentry stated, “This arrest is another example of our deputies remaining proactive and committed to keeping dangerous drugs out of our communities. Fentanyl continues to be one of the greatest threats we face, and our deputies will continue working every day to identify those responsible for bringing these deadly narcotics into Cullman County. I am proud of the outstanding work our deputies do to protect the citizens of this county.”

REGISTERED S*X OFFENDER APPREHENDED

On Friday July 31, the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office received an anonymous tip regarding the location of absconded registered s*x offender James Jackson Pace.

Acting on the information received, deputies responded to the location and safely apprehended Pace without incident.

Pace was arrested on a Cullman County Grand Jury indictment charging him with two counts of violating the Alabama S*x Offender Registration and Community Notification Act SORNA. He is currently being held on a $20,000 property bond.

Pace previously served 15 years in the Alabama Department of
Corrections after being convicted of R**e in the First Degree and So**my in the First Degree involving an 8-year-old female victim.

Following his release from prison in January 2022, Pace registered with the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office SORNA Unit as required by law. During a monthly address verification conducted in August 2024, deputies discovered that Pace had moved from his registered residence without notifying the SORNA Unit, a violation of Alabama law.

A warrant was issued for Pace’s arrest, and the United States Marshals Service was notified that he had absconded. Despite ongoing efforts to locate him, his whereabouts remained unknown until today’s anonymous tip led deputies directly to his location.

Sheriff Matt Gentry praised the work of the deputies involved and thanked the citizen who came forward with information.

“I want to commend our deputies for their outstanding work in safely taking this offender into custody,” said Sheriff Matt Gentry. “This arrest is a perfect example of how important our partnership with the community truly is. One anonymous tip helped remove an absconded s*x offender from our streets. If you know something, please say something. The information you provide could make all the difference in keeping Cullman County safe.”

Mr. Calvert has been located and is safe!

Sheriff Gentry would like to thank the dedication and selflessness of all those who helped in this effort. Law enforcement, fire fighters, EMS, community members, churches, volunteers and countless others have been out in force covering miles and miles of very tough terrain.

The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office is asking for your assistance with locating a Missing Person. Gary Calvert (85) suffers from Dementia and has left his residence on foot.

He was last seen in the area of County Road 122
at approximately 1pm on Thursday, July 30th.

He was wearing brown shorts, brown shoes, and a tshirt.

On the morning of Thursday, July 30, 2026, investigators with the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office were attempting to serve a search warrant in the Bremen community.

Upon making contact, the suspect was found to be armed with a firearm. Shots were fired, and all law enforcement personnel are safe. Deputies and investigators immediately rendered first aid until emergency medical personnel arrived. The suspect was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

This was an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the community.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) will be conducting the investigation, pursuant to established procedures. This remains an active and ongoing investigation, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
