🌟Tip for preparing your garden beds for winter:
Although many of us add it in the spring, you want to add compost in late autumn to let the soil soak up those nutrients over the winter. Add a couple of inches of compost or manure on top of your beds before the ground freezes. Then, add a light layer of straw or mulch to prevent soil erosion, nutrient leaching, and w**d development.

After working hard in the garden, take a moment to pause in nature and relax.
Bacteria found in the soil helps fire up brain cells that can produce serotonin and dopamine, the chemicals in the brain that induce happiness.

Now (Mid-October) is a great time to begin planting bulbs that will flower in the spring. You can keep this up until the middle of November (or later if the ground isn’t frozen).

Use bulb fertilizer instead of bone meal in the planting holes and protect the bulbs from pests by surrounding them with wire poultry cages. A visit to your local plant nursery can help you decide which bulbs will work best! 🌷

Garden bathing is a mindful way of connecting with nature. By honing in on your senses you can develop a deeper appreciation of the world around you, while also reducing anxiety and depression. All Cullowhee Community Garden members and volunteers have the opportunity to garden bathe in the spots pictured.
It is recommended to turn off devices, not interact with others, and experience your garden to its fullest potential. For further connection, you can take off your shoes and socks!
At the CCG we garden bathe for 15 minutes, but on your own time it can go on for as long as you'd like!

With summer *almost* officially over some garden members have started their fall garden while others may be letting the soil rest. September is a good time to start planning for next Spring!

Garden Manager, David, will be doing an analysis of what we grew and how much of each kind of vegetable – based on the donation log. This might influence what you want to grow next year. Be on the look out for this info in the next garden newsletter.

Community gardens provide an enhanced sense of community.
Unlike personal gardens, successful community gardens are designed to be collaborative projects. Coming together to plant seeds, w**d rows, and pick fresh produce can all foster a sense of ownership in the community.
