Civil Air Patrol marks its 78th anniversary today, having forged a legacy of selfless service and volunteerism that began taking shape less than a week before Pearl Harbor. Over nearly eight decades, CAP's missions have ranged from protecting domestic oil tankers against deadly German U-boat attacks to coming to local communities’ aid in the aftermath of natural and man-made disasters and developing cutting-edge technological tools to guide searchers to the missing. CAP continues to help develop the nation’s future leaders through its cadet program, and its aerospace education program promotes STEM education in U.S. classrooms. The U.S. Air Force auxiliary for more than 70 years, CAP is a recognized part of the Air Force Total Force. Its most recent initiatives include providing cadet pilot training as part of the response to the nation’s pilot shortage.

The Cadet Encampment Assistance Program is now open today, November 1st, for winter encampment applications! (summer will open 1 March).
Applications will close 2 December 2019 and all applicants will be notified of their status by 6 December at the latest.
Thanks to Air Force support, CAP has special funding available to cover encampment fees and uniforms with an emphasis on serving economically disadvantaged cadets through the Cadet Encampment Assistance Program or CEAP (say, "seep"). An inability to afford encampment should not hold back cadets who want to participate in encampment.

NASA History
When Space Shuttle mission STS-95 (Discovery) launched #OTD, Oct. 29th 1998, one of the mission’s Payload Specialists, Ohio Senator John Glenn, completed a historic space first for the second time in his life, becoming the oldest man in space at 77 years old.
One of #NASA's Mercury 7 Astronauts, John Glenn was the first American to orbit the Earth when he flew aboard #Friendship7 in 1962. After he resigned from NASA in 1964, he became involved in politics, winning the first of four consecutive Senate terms in 1974.
As a Senator, John’s Congressional efforts focused on the aging population, and during his nine-days aboard STS-95, his efforts were no different, spending much of the mission experimenting on how his body responded to the microgravity environment. John died on December 8th, 2016 at 95 years old, and to this day, remains the oldest human to travel into space.
On Saturday, October 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., local police departments and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will give the public its 18th opportunity in nine years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. Last fall Americans turned in nearly 469 tons (more than 937,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at nearly 6,300 sites operated by the DEA and almost 5,000 of its state and local law enforcement partners. Overall, in its 17 previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners have taken in more than 11.8 million pounds—approximately 5,900 tons—of pills.

CULPEPER, VA. Twenty-four members of Civil Air Patrol supported the 2019 Culpeper Air Fest on Saturday, October 12, at the Culpeper Regional Airport (KCJR). Called the "Best Little Airshow on the East Coast," the airshow drew a crowd of about 5,000 spectators from Northern Virginia area about 40 miles outside of Washington, DC. The airshow celebrated its 20th year and opened the day's festivities with a flag drop performed by the Flying Circus Airshow out of Bealeton, VA, and concluded with a Warbird Flyover late that afternoon.
Led by Minuteman Composite Squadron Commander, 1st. Lt. Adrian Joye, CAP volunteers from Minuteman and Prince William Composite Squadrons, welcomed and assisted the public at the shuttle depot and guided traffic towards designated parking areas for volunteers, vendors, or the ADA accessible lot. Groups of senior members and cadets rotated between the shuttle depot, parking lot duty, and recruiting booth.
Second Lieutenant Dave Sommers of Prince William and Maj. Rob Keith of Minuteman hosted tours of the CAP Cessna 182 G1000 aircraft on static display next to the recruiting booth. A steady stream of curious visitors had the chance to sit in the left and right seats of the Cessna 182, have their photo taken with CAP aircrew, and interact with both Lt. Sommers and Maj. Keith on aircraft capabilities.

Prince William Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol
MANASSAS, VA. Civil Air Patrol’s Prince William Composite Squadron hosted its first annual “Aviation Day” at the Manassas Regional Airport on Saturday, October 5, 2019. Led by Prince William’s aerospace education team, over 30 volunteer staff shared their time, expertise, and passion for aviation throughout the day with 69 CAP members, home school students, and local educators from across Northern Virginia.
Aviation Day encompassed hands-on learning activities detailing the flight planning process to include charting flight route, weather reports, flight plan filing, and simulated air traffic control culminating in a computerized flight simulation. Other activities included flight line marshaling training and exploration of CAP’s extensive STEM kit collection.
Groups of participants were provided an escort and passport to guide them through each station to include pre-flighting a CAP Cessna 182 G1000 on static display staged on the terminal ramp. Also on display was a WWII trainer Boeing PT-17 aircraft on loan from the Flying Circus of Bealeton, VA. Members of Winchester Composite Squadron engaged and challenged participants through a variety of STEM kits on display sharing their passion for aerospace education.
Special thanks to all the volunteers who handled check-in, brought flight simulators, STEM kits, and radio communication cache, facilitated learning stations, and ferried/taxied aircraft for static display tours.
