Upcoming Program: Glacier Girl, A Legend Returns to the Sky
Join a park ranger at the Pinnacle Overlook to discover the remarkable story of Glacier Girl, the legendary World War II P-38 Lightning that captured the attention of visitors to Cumberland Gap National Historical Park in 2002.
Learn about the aircraft’s wartime mission, its emergency landing on the Greenland ice cap, and how it remained buried beneath hundreds of feet of ice for nearly 50 years as part of the famed “Lost Squadron.”
Hear the inspiring story of Roy Shoffner, who grew up in Middlesboro, and how his determination and support helped make the recovery and restoration of Glacier Girl possible. After decades beneath the ice, the aircraft was restored to flying condition and took to the skies once again.
Discover why Glacier Girl’s memorable flight over Cumberland Gap and the Pinnacle Overlook remains a cherished moment in the park’s history.
