We would like to introduce Kathryn and Rosalia.
On March 4, 2026, Kathryn experienced a life-threatening pregnancy complication when she suffered a placental abruption resulting in hemorrhagic shock. After her husband, Carlos, called 911, crews from Lincoln Rescue arrived on scene, quickly recognized the severity of her condition, and requested Cumberland EMS for a prehospital blood transfusion response.
Once on scene, responders from both departments worked together to stabilize Kathryn while Cumberland paramedics initiated a transfusion of whole blood prior to arrival at the hospital. Thanks to the rapid recognition, coordinated teamwork, and advanced prehospital care provided that day, both Kathryn and Rosalia made a full recovery.
Today, during EMS Week 2026, we were honored to recognize the first responders whose professionalism, teamwork, and commitment to patient care helped save two lives.
This year’s EMS Week theme, “Improving Outcomes, Together,” reflects exactly what occurred that day — dispatchers, EMS providers, firefighters, hospital staff, and healthcare partners working together to deliver lifesaving care when it mattered most.
We would also like to recognize and thank all EMS professionals who serve their communities every day. EMS Week is an opportunity to honor the dedication, compassion, and sacrifice of the men and women who answer the call, often during the most difficult moments in people’s lives.
Thank you Kathryn for allowing us to share your amazing story!
