One of the most jaw-dropping views in Kentucky can be found at Bullock Overlook in Kingdom Come State Park, high on Pine Mountain near Cumberland. Sitting around 2,680 feet above sea level, the overlook opens to layer after layer of Appalachian ridges and valleys, making it especially beautiful when morning fog settles below the mountaintop. Bullock is also home to the park’s only cabin, which sits at the highest lodging elevation anywhere in the Kentucky State Park system. Kingdom Come itself reaches about 2,700 feet and protects 1,283 acres, with its name coming from Kentucky author John Fox Jr.’s novel The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come. Around the park, 14 short hiking trails lead through mountain woods, huge rock formations and scenic overlooks. Log Rock is a natural sandstone bridge, while Raven Rock rises 290 feet at a steep 45-degree angle. The park also connects with the 38-mile Little Shepherd Trail. Down by the 3.5-acre lake, visitors can fish for bass, crappie and trout, rent pedal boats, play nine-hole miniature golf, camp, picnic, or explore the Cave Amphitheater tucked beneath a massive sandstone rock shelter.
