The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office is a full service law enforcement agency that is dedicated to serving the citizens of Cumberland County and providing mutual aid to the surrounding jurisdictions. The office consists of the Sheriff, 14 full time appointed deputies, who in addition to providing law enforcement duties, also are responsible for civil and criminal process, inmate and mental trans

port and courtroom security. Five full time dispatchers and 8 part time dispatchers operate the county’s Enhanced 911 system which serves as the primary answering point for calls for service for law enforcement, Cartersville, Cumberland and Randolph Fire Departments , Cartersville and Cumberland Rescue.

BREAKING: Appomattox County Deputy Killed in Line of Duty While Assisting at Crash Scene

Appomattox County, Va. — An Appomattox County Sheriff’s deputy was killed in the line of duty while assisting at the scene of a motor vehicle crash, according to the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office announced today that Deputy Burlie W. Duvall III was killed while assisting at a crash scene on August 6, 2026. Sources tell us the crash occurred yesterday evening on Route 460 in Campbell County.

“Deputy Burlie W. Duvall III dedicated his life to protecting this community, and he gave that life while serving others,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “His courage, selflessness, and commitment to duty will never be forgotten.”

Officials said the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation by the appropriate authorities.
