Today, members of the department conducted live fire training operations at the regional burn facility in Smithfield. These evolutions provide firefighters with critical hands-on experience under realistic fire conditions, sharpening skills in fire attack, search and rescue, ventilation, command, accountability, radio communications, and firefighter safety.

As Chief of the Cumberland Fire Department, I would like to extend the Department’s deepest condolences to the Boston Fire Department, Boston Firefighters IAFF Local 718, and the family, friends, and fellow firefighters of Firefighter Robert Kilduff, Jr. following this tragic line of duty death.

This heartbreaking loss is a solemn reminder of how dangerous this profession truly is and the sacrifices firefighters make each and every day in service to others. Firefighter Kilduff answered the call with courage, dedication, and selflessness. These are the qualities that define the fire service.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all those mourning this tremendous loss.

Chief Nicholas R. Anderson

As residents clean out from the recent snow storm, please remember to clear snow and ice from home vents and heating system exhausts, as well as natural gas meters and regulators.

Blocked vents or meters can interfere with proper operation and may lead to gas buildup or dangerous carbon monoxide conditions inside the home.

Taking a few extra minutes to uncover these areas helps keep your household safe. If you smell gas or your carbon monoxide alarm activates, leave the home immediately and call 911.

Stay safe.
