September 1, 2026:

Hwy. 63 Bridge Replacement:
Prep work for final sidewalk installation in underway. The concrete team should return sometime between this Friday (9/4) and next Tuesday (9/8) to pour the sidewalks. Once done and cured pedestrian traffic will be moved out of the multi-use recreation lane and to its permanent home on the new sidewalk. Lake St. removals and dredging could commence as soon as Wednesday (9/2) and will likely run as late as next Friday (9/11). Blacktopping is planned for the week of September 14th. That leaves a few loosed ends, like the polymer overlay on the multi-use recreational lane and the staining of the faux-rock facades for the week of September 21st. Completion is still planned for Friday September 25th.

Local Street Improvement Projects:
The Barron County Highway Department will return in later September for some shouldering work where roads were pulverized and repaved, along with resurfacing of the cemetery driving lanes.

Hwy. 63 Work on one large culvert still needs to be completed, which should be done by the middle part of next week. Final approvals of the overlay mix are imminent and paving operations should be in full swing by the end of next week.

Brightspeed Fiber Installation: No new update from Brightspeed was available at the time of this notice.

With bowhunting season (unbelievably) now just a few weeks away, we thought this would be a good time to remind everyone that the City of Cumberland changed its ordinances last year to expressly require written permission to hunt on any city-owned land. The link to the ordinance is below. Permission must be renewed annually, so permission granted in a previous year is not valid in 2026. If you'd like to seek permission, please contact City Hall.

What a fabulous addition to our downtown. Bravo!

Thank you to our local artists Jeff and Chris Hile, from Dancing Bird Art Studio and Music Shop for the spectacular mural.
The co-op is very thankful to former ICFC board president and former Cumberland ETC president Lori Bock for making the co-op’s dream of a mural come true. Lori was instrumental in helping Cumberland ETC to apply for a grant for the arts, and ETC made the mural possible by gifting the grant to the co-op.

August 25, 2026:

Hwy. 63 Bridge Replacement:
Pedestrian traffic should be routed across the new multi-use recreational lane sometime today. Pouring of the concrete bridge approaches is now scheduled to start Wednesday August 26th. If it indeed occurs, Lake St. removals and dredging should start next week--possibly Tuesday September 1st. The curb and gutter installation has been postponed to facilitate the approaches, so no word on when exactly that will occur. Blacktopping will be the last major hurdle, and that too will be scheduled depending upon how the rest of the schedule unfolds in the final weeks.

Local Street Improvement Projects:
The Barron County Highway Department will be returning after Rutabaga to wrap up their final work for us this year.

Hwy. 63 Resurfacing south of Cumberland towards Turtle Lake:
Work on this project is underway and still on schedule. Mill and overlay work is currently scheduled to begin the week of August 31st and last about 6-8 weeks.

Brightspeed Fiber Installation: This major fiber installation project is set to commence on or about August 31st and will take several months to complete.

There's a Google maps glitch. The bridge is still closed, but

We are aware that Google Maps is causing some confusion today. They are erroneously routing traffic across the Highway 63 bridge. The problem is, it's still CLOSED and not expected to open until approximately September 25. We have reported it, but the edit is "pending" - plan to continue using alternate routes.

August 18, 2026:

Hwy. 63 Bridge Replacement:
We don't bring good news this week. What was an approximate two week delay two weeks ago, that was potentially downgraded to a one week delay last week, now looks to have gotten worse. Currently the concrete subcontractor that has thrown a wrench in the works reports that rebar for the bridge approaches will be delivered Friday of this week. This means the concrete approaches will be poured next week, and with curing time means that not much else will happen until after Rutabaga. Lake Street removals and channel dredging are now scheduled to begin the week of August 31st. The primary contractor has submitted a new project schedule to the DOT showing a completion date of September 25th. Since there is no justifiable reason for the delay (i.e. weather), we presume there will be liquidate damages assessed by the DOT. We have already asked and will continue to inquire if, since the bulk of the cost of the bridge is being paid for locally, we get credit to our final cost for our pro-rated share of any such liquidated damages. Please remember, this is a DOT project and none of the contractors work directly for the City of Cumberland--so we have no control over the situation. We can only advocate on behalf of the community and report the current status. So in short--please don't kill the messenger!

Local Street Improvement Projects:
The Barron County Highway Department will be blacktopping through Wednesday of this week (August 19th). What work they do not complete this week will be completed when they return after Rutabaga.

Hwy. 63 Resurfacing south of Cumberland towards Turtle Lake:
Work on this project is underway and still on schedule. Mill and overlay work is currently scheduled to begin the week of August 31st and last about 6-8 weeks.

08/13/2026

As we've previously reported, the county will be returning next week to blacktop some of the streets they've previously milled or pulverized. This work will start on Monday August 17th and they will work until Thursday August 20th. They will start on roads that we're milled earlier in the summer, then move on to the roads that were pulverized recently. Please do not park on these streets during these dates!! We will be putting up some no parking signs as well, but want to get the word out early. The county will complete as much of the blacktopping as they can next week, and will return after Rutabaga to finish what they can't get to. Please plan accordingly. Once blacktop is installed, it can typically be driven on within hours. We're almost done, and your patience has been appreciated!
