The Virginia Beehive Distribution Program is now open for applications! 🐝

This program provides free beehive assembly equipment to Virginia residents, to help expand the number of actively managed honey bee colonies throughout the Commonwealth.

If you're interested in beekeeping and want to support the health and diversity of the Commonwealth's pollinators and ecosystems, apply by Sept. 9. 🍯🌼

This workshop is designed to give participants practical, hands-on experience with poultry processing from start to finish. You'll also learn essential food safety and handling practices to help ensure a safe, high-quality product. This program will be held at a private farm, participants should plan to bring their own lunch as needed. Water and light refreshments will be provided.

Join Region 8 as they will be hosting a tour focused on local proteins and other locally sourced products that schools can purchase and incorporate into their operations. Attendees will tour 5 Pillar Meats, a family-owned custom and USDA-inspected meat processing facility in Farmville, Virginia, specializing in premier Virginia-raised cattle, sheep, and goats. Sekou Abdus-Sabur will share the story of how the business began and the journey to opening the processing facility in Farmville. Additional guests will discuss their products and how they can be used in school kitchens.

Following the tour, participants will enjoy a delicious lunch prepared using locally grown and sourced products.

The Heart of Virginia Beekeepers will meet Tuesday, September 1st at 7 pm at the Prince Edward County Extension Office (100 Dominion Dr., Farmville 23901) near Lowe's and Harbor Freight.

The speaker will be Amanda Sweeney, Founder and Keeper of the Bees at Edgewood Apiaries in Bremo Bluff, VA.
