Every year, Rhode Island Monthly polls Rhode Islanders about their favorite places in a variety of categories.There were quite a few Cumberland businesses that made their way into the winner's circle for 2026. 🥳 🙌

Proving something that many of us already know -Cumberland does represent a lot of what is good and best about Rhode Island. I'm glad to see some of our great small businesses celebrated and highlighted.

Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by yesterday’s tragic crash on I-295, especially the families and loved ones of the two people who lost their lives. We also continue to hold in our thoughts the witnesses, motorists, and first responders who were confronted with an incredibly difficult scene.

What happened afterward is also a reminder of the courage and professionalism of the people who respond when our community needs them most.

Crews worked to extricate victims and confront a fire and a dangerous situation requiring specialized equipment and additional resources.

Our firefighters, along with responders from Lincoln, Woonsocket, Plainville, North Smithfield, Millville, Cumberland EMS, and our law enforcement partners, worked together to bring an extremely challenging situation under control and make the scene safe.

These are the moments that remind us what public safety truly means. Our first responders run toward situations most of us would instinctively run from. Their courage, training, teamwork, and commitment make all of us safer.

On behalf of the Town of Cumberland, thank you to every person who responded, and please keep everyone affected by this tragedy in your thoughts.

A big thank you to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island for joining us at the Amaral Building today for two jam-packed sessions of “Owls of Rhode Island”! 🦉

Our students got to meet a new owl friend named Acorn and learn all about owls’ habitats, diets, senses, and the incredible structures and functions that make them such fascinating creatures.

It’s always so great to see the energy and excitement that programs like this bring into the Amaral Building. We’re grateful to everyone who helps make this space come alive!

It came up in my memories today that it was four years ago, that the Town received a $150,000 grant for improvements to the Diamond Hill Park amphitheater and I think these before and after photos speak for themselves!

The grant helped us add new AV equipment, install the incredible Agonza mural, and complement the improvements to the reflection pond.

We’re proud to continue investing in Diamond Hill Park and creating a space where our community can gather, celebrate, and make memories. Here’s to many more great memories at the park! 🌳🎶✨

Friendly Reminder: Today, Monday, August 10th is a Rhode Island Holiday. In observance, Town offices will be closed today (8/10). Town Offices will reopen tomorrow with summer hours.

Additionally, trash and recycling services will be delayed by one day due to the holiday. As always, all of the trash and recycling holidays can be found on the town’s website:

From delicious food and local vendors to live music, games, double rainbows, and an amazing fireworks show, it was a night filled with fun. There’s nothing like summer at Diamond Hill Park!

Reminder: Traffic pattern change beginning for the Diamond Hill Road Bridge (Route 114) where it passes 295.

⚠️ REMINDER: Starting tonight, we will reduce the number of travel lanes from two to one in each direction at the Diamond Hill Road Bridge (Route 114) where it passes over I-295 in Cumberland for about three months for ongoing rapid bridge replacement.

During demolition, traffic may be detoured overnight, with one lane of traffic remaining on I-295 under the bridge.

The CHS Class of 1996 will celebrate its 30th Reunion on Saturday, August 8, from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. at the Smithfield Elks.

♻️ E-Waste Event, Saturday, August 8! ♻️

Do you have old electronics gathering dust? Bring them to Cumberland's E-Waste Drop-Off Event on Saturday, August 8, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Cumberland Monastery, located at 1464 Diamond Hill Road.

Accepted items include: computers, laptops, TVs, monitors, cell phones, tablets, printers, gaming equipment, routers, small household appliances, power tools, batteries, cables, stereos, microwaves, and more.

Most items are free to recycle; however, fees apply for certain items, including:

➡️ Small wooden speakers – $5
➡️ Large wooden speakers and laser printers – $10
➡️ Air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, and other appliances that contain coolant – $20
➡️ Printers 4 feet or larger – $50

Please note: household batteries, light bulbs, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, hazardous waste, glass, cardboard, Styrofoam, wood, and other non-electronic materials will not be accepted.

During the event you will stay in your vehicle. Staff from Indie Cycle will unload your electronics for you.

No appointment is needed, and the event is open to everyone, including those who do not live in Cumberland.

Indie Cycle follows a zero-landfill policy. All electronic materials are responsibly recycled through an R2-certified facility.
