Cummington Historical Commission

Cummington Historical Commission Formed in 1979, the Cummington Historical Commission works to preserve the town's rich heritage.

Cummington was founded in 1762 when Colonel John Cuming purchased “Township Number Five”. Over the next seventeen years a hardy band of New Englanders tamed and settled the Western Wilderness of Massachusetts, finally incorporating the town in 1779. Over its two centuries, Cummington has written a fascinating history of industrial growth, farmland expansion and bred a cast of intriguing characters. Today, the Cummington Historical Commission seeks to preserve the town’s rich agricultural and industrial heritage at our Kingman Tavern. This small town gem boasts a 5,000 artifact collection in our fifteen room, four building museum.Highlights include a weave loft, a replica millinery shop, military artifacts, a nineteenth century cider press, and a fully stocked general store just to name a few. Tours are offered Saturdays in July and August 2-5 pm.

Herman Melville's Arrowhead

A photo from our collections of the Allen Farm arch! This photo was taken around 1915. This farm was owned by William Russell Allen, who was the grandson of Pittsfield's own "Fighting Parson", Rev. Thomas Allen, who fought in the Battle of Bennington.
William Allen bred and trained race horses on his Pittsfield farm, and a horse he bred, Kremlin, set a world record for running a mile in 2.07 minutes.

Archaeology dig in Spain yields prehistoric 'crystal weapons' | ARCHAEOLOGY WORLD

How do you feel when you see a beautiful crystal? Perhaps the perfection of the diamond, or the vivid colors of the different gems are your thing? The fact is that people have been fascinated by crystals ever since they had first discovered them.

Yesterday Today

Hedy Lamarr, often proclaimed “the most beautiful woman in the world.” The 26-yr-old Lamarr was thriving in Hollywood when, in September 1940, Nazi U-boats hunted down & sank a cruise ship trying to evacuate 90 British schoolchildren to Canada. 77 drowned in the bleak north Atlantic. Lamarr, a Jewish immigrant from Nazi-occupied Austria, who had been making America her home since 1938, was outraged. She fought back by applying her engineering skills to development of a sonar sub-locator used in the Atlantic for the benefit of the Allies. The principles of her work are now incorporated into modern Wi-Fi, CDMA and Bluetooth technology, and this work led to her to be inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.

Many of you may be curious as to what's been happening at the Old Parsonage. The CHC has hired Mary Quigley (Quigley Builders, Inc.) to begin preserving this Cummington landmark. Built around 1821, the Old Parsonage is in need of much repair. We anticipate this to be a long project and will post periodic updates here as progress is made.
