Update from Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA)

COVID-19 Update March 31, 2020

Today, the Baker-Polito Administration announced several updates related to the COVID-19 outbreak including extending the non-essential business emergency order and guidance for Executive Branch employees until May 4. The Department of Public Health’s Stay-At-Home Advisory remains in effect. The Administration also updated the “COVID-19 Essential Services” categories for businesses and other organizations that provide essential services and workforces related to COVID-19 that are permitted to operate brick and mortar facilities during the emergency.

DPH issued new guidance today around hotels, motels, inns, beds and breakfasts and other short-term residential rentals. Based on this new guidance, hotels, motels, and short-term rentals may only be used for efforts related to fighting COVID-19, like front line health workers or individuals, or for Massachusetts residents who have been otherwise displaced from their residences.

For full details, including the essential services extension order, list of categories of essential services, related FAQ and other guidance and announcements, see: www.mass.gov/covid-iwmp

RIP Officer McNab

RIP Officer McNab

It is with deep sorrow for Acting Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood to inform you of the tragic death of Springfield Police Officer Aaron McNab Friday night.

Officer McNab was away with friends and family at Lake Morey in Vermont when he died in a swimming accident. At approximately 9pm, Vermont State Troopers were called for a report of Officer McNab missing from a waterfront property.
At approximately 10:25pm, Troopers located Officer McNab and recovered his body from the water near the shoreline. The Vermont State Police contacted the Acting Commissioner late Friday night and informed her of his passing.

Acting Commissioner Clapprood, members of her command staff and Mayor Domenic J. Sarno met with Officer McNab’s family and loved one’s on Saturday afternoon and we ask that you please respect their privacy while they grieve.

“Whether its on-duty or off-duty, any time we lose a fellow Springfield Police Officer it is an emotional drain on all of the women and men in blue. Officer McNab was taken away too soon and showed so much promise in his time as a Springfield Police Officer. We will be praying for him and loved ones during this trying time and will remind them that Officer McNab will forever be a member of our Springfield Police family,” said Acting Commissioner Clapprood.

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno stated, “First of all, my sympathy, thoughts, prayers and encouragement to the family and friends of Officer McNab. Commissioner Clapprood and I have met with his family to offer any and all assistance needed. We here in our Springfield Police Department and our City mourn his loss --- we are his family.”

Funeral arrangements have not yet been finalized. Officer McNab became a Springfield Police Officer in November 2018. He was 30 years old.
