Wildfire Preparedness Workshop This Saturday, August 16, 1-3PM in Los Altos

Your home’s best defense against wildfire begins in your own yard, starting with Zone Zero. Zone Zero refers to the first five feet around your home, and it’s one of the most critical areas to maintain when it comes to wildfire protection.

Take these simple but important steps:

- Keep the first 5 feet around your home clear of any combustibles including plants, furniture, and wood piles
- Clear leaves from rain gutters
- Trim trees overhanging your home
- Remove dry and dead vegetation from your property
- When building or renovating, consider fire-resistant roof and siding materials

Creating and maintaining defensible space can significantly reduce your home’s vulnerability to wildfire.

Learn more about how you can prevent and prepare for wildfire at our final workshop of the season planned this Saturday, August 16 at the City of Los Altos - City Hall Community Center. Register and find more information at sccfd.org.

Attention Montebello neighbors: you may see SCVFD personnel working near the hydrant on Montebello Rd just below Swiss Creek. One of the winter storms damaged the foundation of the water tank that feeds this hydrant. Over the coming weeks we will be draining the water tank so repairs can be made to the foundation and the hydrant placed back in service.

Last week volunteers trained on progressive hose lays as the final step in the annual RT-130 refresher. Just as we are doing drills to prepare for fire season, now is a great time for you to get prepared too; as the weather warms and dries it is the right time to refresh your defensible space and review emergency plans!
