From pushing shelves out of a common area for a blank wall to film against, to cramming our selves and equipment in a small room on the 311th TRS Command Hall, to a DIY solo set up from the chaplain's home, to finally having our studio in the Chapel Team's office, it's safe to say that we've gone through a lot of location changes in the last month and a half.
We take "Excellence in All We Do" very seriously in the 517 TRG Chapel Team's media team, and sometimes that means being adaptable to less-than-ideal situations. We kept working at different locations until we could make our studio (stay tuned for a post on that) in order to find where we could maximize the quality for the audience. The community is what makes us, so to give back we put our all in to everything we do.

The 517th Training Group Chaplain Corps welcomed Chaplain Candidate*, 2Lt Matt "LTL" Lanham for a 35 day active-duty training tour during May/June. While here, Lt Lanham led a variety of resilience events, facilitated talks and briefs relevant to the concerns of Airmen, conducted trainings for Chapel White Ropes, preached at PoM & Naval Post Graduate School Chapels, supported off-post religious education opportunities, and engaged meaningfully with both staff and students. Lt Lanham was a terrific asset to the 517th TRG/HC!

*The Chaplain Candidate program provides an opportunity for individuals interested in serving as military chaplains to "intern" with the Chaplain Corps while pursuing the degree/ministerial credentials required for active-duty chaplains.

Airmen of the 311th & 314th Training Squadrons faced off in Chapel-sponsored BROOMBALL (it's like Hockey - only without the skates or prerequisite skill) last Friday in San Jose! You can tell by the falls that a high-risk activity waiver was required!! Ch Vincent facilitated a brief "leadership forum on decision-making" following game-time, highlighting the importance of taking responsibility for all the "high-risk" stuff of life - the stuff that nobody ever asks for a waiver for, but involves just as much risk. In every case, it's helpful to pause and take stock of associated risks - and acknowledge how they apply to oneself and one's Wingman.

On December 16, 2017, 6 volunteers led by A1C Cao and A1C Dobransky traveled to Point Lobos to participate in the Point Lobos Community Planting Day. 54 volunteers from the community came out for the event and volunteered over 270 service hours to the protection of Point Lobos and its shorelines.

The volunteers planted over $1,500 worth of plants that will protect the shoreline from erosion and preserve its beauty in the future.

The 6 Airmen, volunteering through the White Rope program at the Defense Language Institute, Presidio of Monterey, worked alongside California State Parks, Point Lobos foundation, Point Lobos Docents, CSUMB, as well as a number of smaller schools. This collaboration will not only serve to bolster the relationship between DLI and the local community, but also to protect the Point Lobos shoreline for years to come.

Airmen from the 311th/314th Training Squadrons ran a 3-5K this week to raise money in support of communities affected by recent hurricanes Maria/Irma/Harvey.

The Relay Flag was made from household “debris” (i.e. a broom stick, table cloth and duct tape), reminding us that in the aftermath of the hurricanes we CAN pick up the pieces. There is hope – and it’s often found in people like these Airmen, who all came out to help support others in need!

159 participants raised $1,865. Thanks for making a difference!
