As we ALL know by now we are having a problem with smoke and poor air quality. Please avoid being outside as much as possible especially if you have
any types of known respiratory
conditions. We are including a
blurb about how you can stay a
little more smoke free and safe
during this. We are also putting a link for you to be able to check the air quality. Obviously this is all over the news as well.

Advice from the professionals, aka, blurb.

Stay inside with doors and windows closed. Set your HVAC to "recirculate" instead of "fresh air" and install a MERV-13 or HEPA filter. Run portable air purifiers, avoid indoor cooking methods like frying/broiling, and do not burn candles or use fireplaces. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Managing your indoor environment during an Air Quality Alert involves taking specific steps to block outside pollutants and clean the air already inside your home: [1]

Seal the Indoors: Keep all windows and doors securely shut. If you run central air conditioning, ensure the system's intake is set to recirculate air. [1]

Filter the Air: Upgrade your furnace filter to a MERV-13 rating, and consider using portable HEPA air purifiers in the rooms you spend the most time in. [1, 2, 3]

Create a "Clean Air Room": Pick one room (usually a bedroom) where you seal off drafts and run a portable air purifier to create a safe haven from outdoor smoke. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Avoid Indoor Pollutants: Do not add to the air pollution. Avoid burning candles, using wood stoves, or smoking indoors. Additionally, avoid frying or broiling food, as this creates fine particulate matter. [1, 2]

Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Skip using harsh cleaning chemicals, aerosol sprays, or strongly scented air fresheners, which can further irritate your respiratory system. [1, 2]

If You Need to Go Out: Wear an N95 or KN95 respirator, and keep your car windows closed while setting the climate control to recirculate air. [1, 2]

Monitor Local Conditions: You can track your exact local Air Quality Index (AQI) using AirNow.gov or check for local advisories from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

AirNow is your one-stop source for air quality data. Our recently redesigned site highlights air quality in your local area first, while still providing air quality information at state, national, and world views.

Please be prepared! This doesn’t mean there will be a tornado, this just means there is potential with the storm we are getting. This storm has produced a lot of tornadoes and significant weather today throughout the Midwest.

Prepare ahead just in case. Obviously we here in Portage Township just had a significant weather shift.

Today the Portage Township Fire Department attended the Three Lakes Academy last day of school field day for some fun! Every year we try to be bigger and better with this event and so far we’ve succeeded! This year we recruited help from the Newton Township Fire Department. They assisted us with water supply as well as spraying the kids! It’s always a great time and we can’t wait until next year! As always, thank you three lakes academy for allowing us to come do this, it’s definitely a highlight for the year! We would also like to thank our members, as well as the Newton Township Fire department for taking time out of your day to bring some joy to the community!

Please be careful! No burning!

Gusty south-southwest winds of 15-20 mph combined with dry and warm conditions and a lack of recent rainfall will lead to elevated wildfire potential this afternoon across much of Upper Michigan with the exception of the Keweenaw Peninsula.

Avoid outdoor burning today. Immediately report any wildfires
to local emergency services by calling 911.

Burn restrictions remain in effect. For complete details, visit
www.dnr.state.mi.us/burnpermits, or by calling 866-922-2876.

With the dry conditions and high winds today is a prime day for a wildfire... PLEASE do NOT burn!
