When the Black Hills heat up and the winds pick up, these crews are ready to answer the call. This K-MAX helicopter lifting off from Custer County Airport with a fire bucket is a powerful reminder of the incredible resources based here in the hills and the people behind them.

We’re proud to support the dedicated men and women of the Black Hills Helitack team, whose primary mission is rapid initial attack on wildland fires throughout the Black Hills Fire Protection District. Their quick response, professionalism, and commitment help protect our communities, forests, homes, and visitors every day.

With current Red Flag conditions, we encourage everyone to use extra caution outdoors and do their part to help prevent wildfires.

A sincere thank you to Black Hills Helitack and all first responders who stand ready when our region needs them most.

At this year’s South Dakota Airports Conference in Pierre, I was honored to be invited to deliver a presentation titled “The Airport Manager’s Role in Customer Service, Operations, and Community Trust.”

The presentation reflected the day-to-day reality of managing a small airport—balancing operations, customer service, and the responsibility of serving as the front door to our community. I truly appreciated the positive feedback and kind words from those in attendance.

The biggest surprise of the conference came when Custer County Airport was named the Office of Aeronautics Airport of the Year for Small General Aviation Airports. It was an unexpected and humbling honor.

While I serve as the airport manager, this recognition belongs to Custer County and the County Commission for their continued support, as well as the pilots and aviation community who use and believe in our airport. I’d also like to thank our consulting engineering team at Mead & Hunt for their partnership and support.

Proud to be a part of it.

“Breaking news from the KCUT radar,
Aircraft N-1225 inbound over Custer tonight!
Clear skies, cool air, and smooth conditions, with a density altitude of fifty-six hundred feet. The kind of night pilots hope for — when performance is strong, visibility is endless, and the sky feels wide open.”
Have a Merry Christmas and to all — a good night!”

Brand new 2023 SF50 Cirrus Vision Jet! Departing Custer County Airport runway 08 and landing on 26

Perks of managing an airport! Great ride around the beautiful Black Hills in Vision Jet.
Cirrus SF50 Vision Jet, the world’s first single-engine personal jet, (also known as the Vision Jet) is a single-engine very light jet designed and produced by Cirrus Aircraft of Duluth, Minnesota, United States. I could not be any more impressed with this aircraft. It’s like flying first class in a commercial airliner, only the first-class seating is in the cockpit. I would like to thank Captain Joel for the ride and stopping at KCUT!! Thanks for watching!
