This incredible aircraft is here to support potential wildland fire operations if needed. With conditions across the Black Hills extremely dry, we're thankful to have these firefighting resources positioned and ready to respond.
We also want to remind everyone that Custer County is currently under a county-wide burn ban. Please do your part to help prevent wildfires by following all restrictions and using extreme caution with anything that could spark a fire.
Stay safe, and thank you to all the firefighters, pilots, and support crews who stand ready to protect our communities. 🔥

Happy Birthday America!

Dear Custer County Airport Visitors,
We are reaching out to our general aviation friends to make you aware of an upcoming Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) that may impact operations at Custer County Airport, as well as heliports in the surrounding area.
The FAA is expected to establish a VIP TFR on July 3. If you plan to conduct flight operations during this time, it is important to obtain the latest NOTAM information before flying.
Please note that this is not a recurring TFR, and as we have seen with previous VIP TFRs, the dates and times are subject to change.
The official NOTAM has not yet been published. In the meantime, you can monitor the FAA TFR website for the latest information:
https://tfr.faa.gov/tfr3/?page=list
Once the NOTAM has been issued, we will post a follow-up that includes a direct link to the NOTAM along with a graphic depicting the TFR boundaries.
We appreciate your help in sharing this information with fellow aviators to ensure everyone is aware of the upcoming restrictions.
Thank you,
Custer County Airport

When the Black Hills heat up and the winds pick up, these crews are ready to answer the call. This K-MAX helicopter lifting off from Custer County Airport with a fire bucket is a powerful reminder of the incredible resources based here in the hills and the people behind them.

We’re proud to support the dedicated men and women of the Black Hills Helitack team, whose primary mission is rapid initial attack on wildland fires throughout the Black Hills Fire Protection District. Their quick response, professionalism, and commitment help protect our communities, forests, homes, and visitors every day.

With current Red Flag conditions, we encourage everyone to use extra caution outdoors and do their part to help prevent wildfires.

A sincere thank you to Black Hills Helitack and all first responders who stand ready when our region needs them most.

At this year’s South Dakota Airports Conference in Pierre, I was honored to be invited to deliver a presentation titled “The Airport Manager’s Role in Customer Service, Operations, and Community Trust.”

The presentation reflected the day-to-day reality of managing a small airport—balancing operations, customer service, and the responsibility of serving as the front door to our community. I truly appreciated the positive feedback and kind words from those in attendance.

The biggest surprise of the conference came when Custer County Airport was named the Office of Aeronautics Airport of the Year for Small General Aviation Airports. It was an unexpected and humbling honor.

While I serve as the airport manager, this recognition belongs to Custer County and the County Commission for their continued support, as well as the pilots and aviation community who use and believe in our airport. I’d also like to thank our consulting engineering team at Mead & Hunt for their partnership and support.

Proud to be a part of it.
