Custer County Sheriff’s Office is Hiring

The Custer County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for seven full-time Deputy Sheriff positions. One position fills an existing vacancy, while six are newly created positions. Start dates will be staggered to accommodate field training.

Starting Wage:
$26.32/hour for uncertified applicants
$27.59/hour for current South Dakota certified officers
$1.00/hour shift differential for hours worked between 6:00 PM and 6:00 AM

Deputies enforce local and state laws, respond to and prevent crime and accidents, serve legal processes, and promote public safety through community policing. The Sheriff’s Office also provides contract patrol services for the City of Custer and the United States Forest Service.

Requirements:
At least 21 years of age
High school diploma or GED
Valid driver’s license with an insurable driving history
No prior felony or qualifying domestic violence convictions
Successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation
Current South Dakota Law Enforcement certification or ability to obtain certification within one year of hire
Availability to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays

Custer County offers the opportunity to serve throughout more than 1,500 square miles of the Black Hills, including areas surrounding Custer State Park, Wind Cave National Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, and the Crazy Horse Memorial.

Custer County is hiring a full-time Equipment Operator I with the Highway Department. This hands-on position helps maintain more than 400 miles of county roads and is ideal for someone who enjoys operating equipment, working outdoors, and being part of a dependable road maintenance team.

Position Highlights:
• $23.88/hour
• Monday–Thursday | 10-hour days
• Weekends and most holidays off, except when weather or emergencies require road maintenance
• Operate graders, loaders, dump trucks, snowplows, mowers, and other equipment
• Perform road maintenance, snow removal, brush clearing, sign maintenance, and minor equipment repairs
• CDL with tanker endorsement preferred; required within 6 months of hire
• Full benefits, including paid leave, insurance options, and SDRS with 6% employer match
