The Slovene Center has been a staple of the Barberton community for over a century and is home to one of only 43 historical markers in Summit County. We couldn't be happier to hold our "(un)Happy Hour" event at this storied establishment next Thursday the 22nd!

During the industrial boom days of the early 20th century, the first wave of eastern European emigrants were busting their tails to make a new life in this land of the free and inject some magic into their adopted new community. They often worked under dangerous conditions in the days before delivered the workplace protections, employee healthcare, and weekends we now enjoy.

So, in addition to serving as the bustling hub of social activity for a vibrant community of new Americans, the Slovenian Independent Society Home provided a vital means of pooling resources to assure sick and death benefits for its hardworking members.

Barberton's ethnic clubs honor the multicultural hustle, teamwork, and ingenuity that helped build the modern middle class. We're glad the Slovene Center is still thriving and hope to see you there next week!

Protect workers' rights. Stay alert to the attacks designed to weaken unions, silence workers and give corporations and billionaires more power at the expense of working people.

Whether someone shops at a local business, attends an event, grabs dinner, or explores downtown with family and friends, those visits support jobs, investment, and economic growth throughout Barberton.

The continued increase in foot traffic shows that revitalization efforts are making a difference — and the future of downtown Barberton is bright.
