Cygnet, Ohio History

Cygnet, Ohio History Cygnet was surveyed in 1883 for Ephraim Shanabarger and was named Pleasant View. An addition was surveyed for Horace S. Walbridge.

At that time, the town was renamed Cygnet. Cygnet, Ohio was once a bustling oil town of over 3,000 residents in the late 1800’s. At the time it was considered The Oil Well Capitol of Ohio. The town contained several markets, saloons, brothels, churches and hotels, filling the downtown area with nearly non-stop activity. Cygnet was also said to be on a list of possible bombing targets by the Axis p

owers in WWII because of its abundance of oil traffic. Cygnet was incorporated on May 7, 1889. The first officials were:
Mayor - E.A. Guy
Clerk and Treasurer - Martin Moran
Trustee - A.L. Mercer
The first meeting was held July 29, 1889.
