We keep discovering more of our story.

When we began the Gordon M. Crothers Legacy Project, we knew our Post had a remarkable history. What we didn't know was just how much of that history was still waiting to be rediscovered.

Through old newspapers, military records, photographs, and other surviving documents, we have been able to piece together more of the story of the veterans who founded Gordon M. Crothers Post 15—and the home they built on Church Street.

We now know more about Gordon M. Crothers, the young World War I soldier whose name our founders chose for their new Post.
We have found the names of the veterans who organized Post 15 in 1919, and the story of their decision in 1921 to build a permanent home.

We have rediscovered the remarkable Armistice Day ceremony in 1927, when more than 500 people gathered as the cornerstone of our building was laid—and learned what our founders placed behind that stone.

We even found the original newspaper description of our building as it neared completion, including its fireplace and mantel that still stand inside today.

Perhaps most importantly, the records have helped us better understand why they built it.

The Dade City Banner wrote in 1927 that Post 15's veterans were erecting their new home “not only for themselves, but for public use.”

Nearly a century later, that purpose continues.

We've updated our website with the story the Gordon M. Crothers Legacy Project has uncovered so far—and how those discoveries are giving new meaning to the Gordon M. Crothers Memorial Preservation Project.

We invite you to read the story, see some of the history we've rediscovered, and learn why this building is so much more than an old building on Church Avenue.

Their Legacy. Our Responsibility.

A BIG thank-you to our friends at The Roost Market Cafe! ❤️🇺🇸

Today, we had the privilege of accepting a generous donation from The Roost, representing the proceeds from the fundraising dinner they held to support Gordon M. Crothers Post 15.

We are incredibly grateful not only for their generosity, but for the time, effort, and community spirit behind it. They opened their doors, brought people together, and helped turn a great meal into meaningful support for our Post and our Preservation Project.

This is what community partnership looks like.

Businesses like The Roost remind us that preserving our Post isn’t something we have to do alone. It takes veterans, families, businesses, organizations, and neighbors all working together to protect a piece of our community’s history.

Thank you, The Roost Market Cafe, for standing with Gordon M. Crothers Post 15. We are proud to call you a community partner! 🇺🇸❤️

A community is measured by the hearts of its people. ❤️

When our neighbors at The Roost Market Cafe heard our plea to help preserve our historic building, they didn’t hesitate to step up. Time and time again, they have found ways to support our mission, and tonight was no exception.

Through their generosity, The Roost hosted a fundraising dinner for the American Legion Family, and our community showed up in force. The restaurant was filled with friends, neighbors, stories, laughter, and incredible food—all coming together for a cause that means so much to us.

Tonight wasn’t just about raising funds. It was a reminder of what makes our community so special: neighbors helping neighbors, local businesses giving back, and people coming together to preserve a place that has served generations.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone who attended, volunteered, donated, and especially to the amazing owners and staff of The Roost for making this evening possible. Pictured here alongside members of our American Legion Family, your kindness, generosity, and belief in our mission mean more than words can express. We are truly grateful. ❤️
