The Cadet Program is the largest federally-sponsored youth program in Canada that includes the Royal Canadian Sea, Army and Air Cadets. It is a national program for young Canadians aged 12 to 18 who are interested in participating in a variety of fun, challenging and rewarding activities while learning about the sea, army and air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces. Cadets are encouraged to be

come active, responsible members of their communities. They make valuable contributions to Canadian society on a daily basis in terms of environmental, citizenship and community activities. Cadets also learn valuable life and work skills such as teamwork, leadership and citizenship.

Warrant Officer Second Class Vanessa Salinas paraded with 170 St. James and 604 Moose Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadrons after being inspired to join by her older cousin. The opportunities within the Cadet Program helped her grow into a confident leader and opened doors for her future.

She credits her experience at Vernon Cadets / Cadets de Vernon, Cold Lake Cadets / Cadets de Cold Lake, and Whitehorse Cadets / Cadets de Whitehorse —both as a course cadet and staff cadet—for shaping her passion for teaching. Supporting and mentoring others has been the most rewarding part of her journey.

As the Program marks 50 years of girls in cadets, she is proud to contribute to a legacy of strong women in uniform. Now enrolled as an Aerospace Control Officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, she remains committed to carrying these values forward.

Canadian Space Agency astronaut Colonel Joshua Kutryk visited Calgary, Alberta, on 25 May 2026 to speak with local cadets.

During the special appearance, he said, “It is the Air Cadet Program that led to my passion for flying and my time in the Air Force, flying fighters, doing test work, and all that stuff that I did before going over to the Canadian Space Agency.”

Colonel Kutryk’s journey is a powerful reminder that the Cadet Program can ignite lifelong passions and open doors to extraordinary opportunities. Through the Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers Group youth programs, young Canadians gain experiences that build confidence, resilience, and teamwork—helping them discover their potential, lead with integrity, and serve with purpose.
