NASA astronauts Col. Bob Hines and Lt. Cmdr. Jessica Wittner recently got a crash course in Army helicopter history at Fort Novosel, Alabama, home of Army Aviation. Historians Billy Croslow and Bryant Macfarlane briefed the astronauts, neither of whom had helicopter experience, on the evolution of rotary-wing aircraft. This was part of the Army's "Zero to Helo" program, designed to prepare astronauts for potential helicopter use in space exploration, mirroring the commercialization of space today with parallels to aviation in the 1920s. Hines, who recently completed a commercial SpaceX mission, and Wittner learned how the Army's historical experience with aviation development can inform the creation of future space-based helicopter technologies, especially after the success of the Ingenuity Mars helicopter. The historians' insights into the complex interplay of technology, business, and politics proved invaluable for the astronauts' future work.

Yesterday, nearly 60 years after it commenced its journey from the battlefields of Vietnam, ACH-47A s/n 64-13149 “Easy Money” arrived at the U.S. Army Aviation Museum and Training Support Facility. The aircraft will undergo restorative and conservational therapy by our team of aircraft surgeons before being placed on permanent exhibit in the collection.

In late 1965, Boeing Vertol converted four CH-47A helicopters to gunships. The ACH-47A was equipped with five M60D machine guns or M2HB heavy machine guns, two 20 mm M24A1 cannons, two 19-tube 2.75-inch FFAR, and a single 40 mm gr***de launcher in the nose. Three gunships were assigned to the 53rd Aviation Detachment in South Vietnam for testing, while the remaining one was retained in the U.S. for weapons testing. By 1966, the 53rd was redesignated the 1st Aviation Detachment (Provisional) and attached to the 228th Assault Support Helicopter Battalion of the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). By 1968, only one gunship remained, “Easy Money”.

The Army would not allow a single ACH-47A to operate alone, and logistic transport helicopters were badly needed in the field. Consequently, the experimental program was cancelled. The aircraft would serve as a training aid at Vung Tau, Savannah Arsenal, and Fort Eustis before being transported to Redstone Arsenal for restoration and outdoor exhibition. The aircraft will be stabilized, conserved, and placed on permanent exhibition within the collection.
