MARK9 Search and Rescue

MARK9 Search and Rescue MARK9 is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit Search and Rescue team based in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. To learn more about our searches navigate to our search page.

MARK9 Search and Rescue (SAR) provides free services to Law Enforcement, Fire/Rescue, Parks and Wildlife and other official agencies of any size that require the use of highly skilled K9s and handlers to locate missing people. The team motto is "Always ready, Ever able" so the team is available 24/7/365. The team trains for 4 types of searches: Live Find, Human Remains Detection (HRD), Trailing an

d Water. We do this by seeking out training locations all over the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex and the surrounding counties and placing our handlers and their K-9s in as close to real situations as training will allow. MARK9 believes that the most important part of a search is to prevent it from occurring. Based on this belief MARK9 provides demonstrations in Alzheimer Safety and Sit & Stays as a way to help prevent people from becoming lost. How We Operate:

MARK9 goes into action after receiving a call for SAR assistance. Due to important legal parameters attendant with the search process, we cannot accept this type of call from the general public, however the following may contact MARK9 for SAR services:

Fire Departments

Law Enforcement

Government Agencies

Recognized search agency with clearance from the law enforcement agency or fire department in charge of the search. Upon receipt of a request for assistance, the unit can be organized and ready to begin response within 20 minutes. Arrival time of the first dog and handler team on the scene will depend on the location of the incident. We will, of course, respond whenever you call. However, the best results are achieved when we are notified early, because the victim hasn't traveled as far. In addition, an early call means weather, civilians, and time have not degraded the search scene. Because we are a volunteer organization, we do not normally respond to calls that request us to search for a suspected criminal or fugitive. The team can operate under your control or we can manage the search for you. That is your agency's decision. We have our own self contained and staffed command post and are ready to respond at any time 24/7/365.

A good hiding spot will challenge the K9, adjusted appropriately to its level of training. This means you might have to change your spot for each K9, but the positive effects of good training are life-long.

Also, in the Texas summer, good hiding spots are in the shade.

We had the pleasure of celebrating Cindy's birthday at training this week! Laurie was kind enough to create this beautiful cake for Cindy, and the rest of us were kind enough to eat it!

The cake is modeled after Cindy's dog Orca and designed in a stained glass motif (Cindy's favorite) and is accessorized with tug toy's, tennis balls, and a bit of source😀

The team had a great morning of training today. Training in the Texas heat isn't much fun but is important to acclimate the dogs and the handlers to the heat. The missing don't wait to get lost when its cooler and we need to be ready when it happens.

MARK9 attendend the presentation for Northeast Texas CART, receiving their national certification from the Department of Justice.
They are one of only 33 CART teams nation wide to achieve this certification. MARK9 was recognized as a supporting agency and also received a certificate for being part of the certification exercise last year. Congratulations to Mike Rambo and that great organization. We look forward to continuing that great partnership!

Team Brodie and Team Aspen had a great opportunity to train in Ohio last week. They trained on, and worked historical graves as old as 1811. They also did some forensic work with caufin wood and pre civil war organic matter. It was a great week and both teams added to their scent pictures and skills to their tool boxes.
Thank you Lou Anne Metz and Tudy Morris for the amazing week and hospitality.

K-9 Teams Aspen and Kao https://www.mark9.org/team/meetthedogs
Had the opportunity to receive an excellent weekend of training in San Marcos at the Texas State Forensic Anthropology Center FACTS K-9. Both teams gained invaluable experience that will directly translate to the work that MARK-9 does across DFW on a daily basis. Would highly recommend this training to any current or aspiring HRD Handlers!

A big congrats to Mike Rambo and the Northeast Texas CART team on receiving their upcoming certification as a nationally recognized Child Abduction Response Team (CART) by the U.S. Department of Justice. A lot of hard work went into receiving the certification, and the CART program goes a long way in keeping our communities and children safe.

An area volunteer group has achieved recognition for its efforts in staging a child search and rescue training exercise in June that included participation by about two dozen law enforcement

Who's ready to start using Pug's as their SAR partner? Very surprising results to this study...

This study measured dogs of three different breeds on an odor-discrimination task, and in doing so exposed some assumptions and biases made about breeds and their abilities.

The member spotlight this week is on George Ramirez and his canine In training, Samantha. Samantha Is a Belgion Malinois with a very sweet disposition, but built with the Malinois drive!

George is a Retired Special Agent/Criminal Investigator with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, where he worked in various investigative disciplines in the Criminal Investigations Unit. With 36 years of service, George actively conducted domestic and international criminal investigations to include Fraud, Identity Theft, Anti-Smuggling, Gangs, Narcotics, Human S*x Trafficking, Financial, and Counter Terrorism. George has also acted as an undercover operative in numerous human trafficking, identity theft, fraud, and narcotics investigations over a span of 11 years. Agent Ramirez was the coordinator for the HSI Dallas Cornerstone Anti-Money Laundering initiative.
George served a four-year tour in the United States Air Force as a Law Enforcement Specialist, and was the Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of Administration and Training. George was a business major at the University of Texas at Arlington, and studied international business at Texas A&M University – Commerce.

George began attending training sessions with MARK9 Search & Rescue in May 2022, and officially became a member on June 28, 2022. George is the K9 Handler for Samantha, and both are currently in training for various Search & Rescue objectives and certifications.

K9 Samantha is a Belgium Malinois (pronounced Mal-in-wah) which date back to the 1800’s, and were first introduced to the United States in the early 1900’s. The Belgium Malinois has an extreme sense of smell and drive, therefore allowing the breed to excel in herding, protection, drug, bomb, gas detection, and search and rescue.

Samantha has an extremely high drive, that keeps everyone always on the go. Samantha loves swimming, boating, hiking, running, playing fetch, tugging, and searching for hidden objects. When not engaging in outside activities or training, Samantha loves to watch sports TV, and engages into the activity as she continuously circles the couch, pausing to watch the ball in action.

Everyone please say hello to George, and "thank you for your service!"

This month, we will focus on our amazing team members and their canines.

First, is Jerry Seevers and his canine Madchen. Madchen is a German Wirehaired Pointer and she is not Jerry's first Search and Rescue canine. He has also trained and utilized Shadow (not pictured) who was used In Air Scent, Scent Specific and HRD searches. He also trained Gypsy (not pictured) in the same disciplines.

Jerry Is currently the President of the Board of Directors for MARK9. He was a previous member of Texas Task Force 1 and 2, and served in the 1st Special Response Group, which took him to Fiji several years ago.

Jerry attended the University of Central Missouri and after graduating went into the Army where he served with distinction during the Vietnam War as a helicopter pilot. He and his lovely wife Linda have been married for 55 years and together they have 3 children and four grandchildren.

Why Search and Rescue?
After flying for the Army, Army Reserve, and National Guard, Jerry was looking for something to replace his flying. He had just purchased a dog that "needed something to do" and he was introduced to Canine SAR. He has never looked back.

Jerry has been a member of MARK9 since 1996!

Everyone, please say hello to Jerry Seevers

Thank you for your service, Jerry!
