JASON SHELTON: Remembering Ruth Bader Ginsburg

"To summarize briefly her contributions to women’s rights–if you have a credit card in your own name and your own credit history, if you have leased an apartment or bought property in your name, if you have consented to your own medical treatment, if you have served on a jury, if you have participated in school sports, you can thank Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg."

The famous injunction in the Torah: Tzedek, Tzedek, Tirdof, or Justice, Justice, You Shall Pursue, is situated in the context of verses imploring us to create a fair and impartial judiciary; our pursuit of a non-partisan judiciary is, in its essence, the pursuit of justice, and our holding fast to this standard honors the memory of a great judge and justice. #ThankYouRBG #ForRuth #andjusticeforall #NCJW

Opinion | My Unlikely Friendship With Ruth Bader Ginsburg

#HonoringRBG - The Human:
People often asked both of us how we became friends. Last December, at dinner one evening she succinctly replied: "A common love for ideas, for music. It was really the [Bach] Goldberg Variations that brought us together."
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/21/opinion/ruth-bader-ginsburg-friendship.html

I was a young, African-American Southerner, working in a Republican administration. But I loved Bach’s Goldberg Variations, and that was enough for her.

Liberal Americans mourn passing of icon Ginsburg, prepare for political battle

Powerful words from National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) CEO Sheila Katz about the incredible Ruth Bader Ginsburg:
“It’s a literal wake-up call to the Jewish people that we need to work together and better ourselves,” said Katz. “We cannot simply mourn Ruth Bader Ginsburg. We must take action to honor her legacy, to fight for a fair court, and to continue to protect women’s rights.” #ForRuth #ripRBG #ruthbaderginsburg #ncjw

Grief-stricken Americans gathered at makeshift memorials around the country on Saturday to mourn the death of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a liberal, feminist icon, as President Donald Trump signaled his intention to fill the vacancy weeks before a heated...

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Champion Of Gender Equality, Dies At 87

WE HAVE NO WORDS. MAY SHE REST IN PEACE.
"Our nation has lost a justice of historic stature," Chief Justice John Roberts said. "We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague. Today we mourn but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her, a tired and resolute champion of justice."

Ginsburg, the second woman to serve on the Supreme Court, died from complications from cancer. Her death will set in motion what promises to be a tumultuous political battle over who will succeed her.

Shabbat Shalom! Exactly 57 years have passed since folks from all over the US stood on the National Mall to demand civil rights and economic opportunity. Today, thousands joined a rally in Washington calling for an end to racial injustice and police violence. We celebrate this momentous day with a quote from Martin Luther King Jr.

We are proud to stand for racial justice.

We are proud to stand for racial justice.

This morning, over 600 Jewish organizations, synagogues, and congregations, including the National Council of Jewish Women, signed this ad in The New York Times: “We say unequivocally: Black Lives Matter.”

We are proud that 44 NCJW sections also signed this important statement. Our Jewish community must continue to rise up for Black lives, including Black Jews, with all of our spiritual, political, and intellectual resources.

Together we say: #BlackLivesMatter. #Jews4BlackLives

#OnThisDay the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote was ratified by the U.S. Congress. A century later, the fight for equal rights continues!

#19thAmendment #100anniversary #votingrights #universalsuffrage

Today marks 100 years since the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. The culmination of decades of activism from women suffragettes, the amendment was originally passed by Congress on June 4, 1919. Just over a year later, on August 18, 1920, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the amendment, securing its adoption. This footage shows just a handful of the 8 million women who took to the polls a few months later, in November 1920, for a presidential election that saw Republican Warren G. Harding defeat Democrat James Cox.

Although the 19th Amendment extended voting rights to millions of women, it’s important to remember that a majority of Black, Indigenous, and Asian American women continued to be disenfranchised even after it was adopted, through poll taxes, Jim Crow policies, citizenship laws, and other means. Even today, restrictive election policies continue to prevent many women of color, as well as incarcerated women, low-income women, and trans women, from exercising their full right to vote. Other societal inequalities, like a lack of affordable access to child care, further exacerbate that problem.

REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE MATTERS. #AbortionAccess4All #BeBoldEndHyde #ActForWomen

"Policies that deny abortion coverage to individuals based on their income level or the type of health insurance they have contradict shared core values and principles of our faiths. Supporting this injustice goes against everything clergy of all faiths should represent.

That’s why we are calling on Congress to pass the Equal Access to Abortion Coverage in Health Insurance (EACH Woman) Act."
