The Day the Doors Opened for Women in Law. 👇

12/01/2023

This Shabbat, we honor the legacy of Sandra Day O'Connor who served as the first ever female justice on the Supreme Court of the United States. Sadly, Sandra passed away at the age of 93 today. Not only was she a distinguished Supreme Court justice, but a lawyer and politician that inspired generations of female attorneys to follow in her footsteps.

Throughout her remarkable career, Sandra achieved historic milestones, notably in the 1992 case of Planned Parenthood v. Casey. Her vote played a crucial role in securing a 5-4 majority, affirming the constitutional right to abortion under the 14th Amendment and upholding the precedent set by Roe v. Wade.

Sandra Day O'Connor's leadership, strength, and wisdom were a source of inspiration for many, and her absence will be deeply felt. May her memory be a blessing.

May her memory be a blessing. 🙏

Rosalynn Carter served her country with strength and grace. She was someone I got to work alongside of, and someone I deeply respected. Thank you, Mrs. Carter for everything you did, for the way you used your voice, for the love you exuded. My deepest condoles to the love of her life, former President Jimmy Carter, and to their entire family.

Also what a statement from former President Carter, “Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.” It doesn’t get better than that.

And let’s not forget her groundbreaking work in the mental health and caretaking space. This is what a deeply meaningful and wildly authentic life looks like.

Today's General Board Meeting was the perfect opportunity to show gratitude to our partners and better understand how working together can help our community thrive.

Our engaging partners - Tori Hobbs, Executive Director at Mosaic Family Services and Sulan Chang, Assistant Program Director at Mosaic - explained very creatively the journey that women at Mosaic who are survivors of domestic abuse or human trafficking undertake in order to transition to independence.

We are grateful to be able to contribute to their healing and empowering process.

With heavy hearts, we share the news of the murder of our partner in Israel and the founding member of נשים עושות שלום - نساء يصنعن السلام - Women Wage Peace, Vivian Silver.

It was previously believed that Vivian was one of the 240+ hostages in Gaza, however, her body has tragically been identified from the October 7th attack.

Born in Canada, Vivian made aliyah 50 years ago, dedicating her life to tirelessly working for a shared society and equality between Jews and Arabs in Israel.

Our world is better because of Vivian. May her memory be a blessing.

The past month has brought sadness and anger, sorrow and rage. Amidst our complex feelings, we mourn all of the lives lost. Every precious life.

May the hostages soon return home. May those displaced find solace. May we come together to find a more hopeful future.

Rachel and Jon Polin, parents of Bring Hersh Home, have shared a plea on behalf of the hostages and their families: "Our son Hersh was taken hostage by Hamas 34 days ago. Held with at least 240 other hostages — each someone’s child, parent, sibling, friend. These are real people with dreams and aspirations. Please don’t forget them."

The US Senate can act now to help ensure the safe return of all the hostages. Email your senator to urge them to sign S. Res. 408, condemning Hamas’s brutal terrorist attacks on Israel and demanding Hamas release all hostages and allow for their safe return home.

📢A BIT OF HOPEFUL NEWS.
"The Texas Senate gaveled in and out on Sunday afternoon without discussing pending legislation, dimming the possibility of additional border security bills passing before the third special session concludes in two days.

The upper chamber was scheduled to take up House Bill 4, which would create a state crime to enter the state illegally from Mexico and would allow police officers to detain and transport that person to a port of entry and order them to return to Mexico, even if they’re not a Mexican citizen. If the immigrant refuses, the officer would arrest the migrant and charge them with a misdemeanor, or a felony if they had crossed illegally multiple times.

But the Senate did not discuss the bill, instead recessing until Tuesday afternoon, the last day of the monthlong special session."

The Senate on Sunday afternoon failed to take action on a border security bill, leaving virtually no time to pass the bill before the special session ends on Tuesday.

We're still in awe of how quickly the Israeli protest movement shifted gears to organize after the October 7 attacks.

Leaders like Prof. Bressler turned their infrastructure into a vast network of care — setting up clothing drives, helping families locate missing people and pets, providing transportation, and more.

This shabbat, we're thinking about their incredible response. As we enter the fourth week since this crisis began, our hearts are with all of the carers who have stepped into action.

Shabbat shalom.

We were disheartened to see a recent statement from where they ignored the heinous acts committed against innocent civilians by Hamas terrorists on October 7, when they indiscriminately massacred more than 1,000 people, and used sexual violence as a weapon of war. Hundreds of women, mothers with their babies, children, elder women and people with disabilities, were victimized.

We insist on the immediate release of 239+ hostages taken captive and held hostage in Gaza.

The attacks on Jews around the world — on college campuses, at airports, in our communities, at our synagogues — must be stopped. As our CEO Sheila Katz said so well, the Jewish people are scared and feel alone as antisemitism accelerates everywhere we look. We condemn all forms of hate. Please join us and unequivocally condemn antisemitism.

A Faith In The Future. A Belief In Action

For more than a century, the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), Greater Dallas Section, has been at the forefront of social change by championing the needs of women, children, and families. We are courageously taking a progressive stance on issues such as economic justice, separation of church and state, and reproductive choice. We proudly stand for a fair and independent judiciary, voting rights and civil liberties, and we advocate for a secure Israel and peace in the Middle East.

We dare to have a vision and dream about what’s possible. Through education, community service, advocacy, and collaboration, we work to address the needs of all people and faiths within our Dallas community. Our advocacy efforts target the deep-rooted causes of our times’ most pressing social issues.

Join us in shaping a better future and put our believes in action!
