The October Lunch & Learn presentation, “First in Our State” by Michael N. Henderson, is now available on the Georgia Archives YouTube channel.

A retired U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander and native of New Orleans, Henderson began researching his family history nearly four decades ago. His research has taken him through numerous archival repositories and led to discoveries about his ancestors' experiences in French and Spanish Colonial Louisiana, including their connections to the American Revolution.

During this presentation, Henderson discusses the genealogical research that led to his induction into the Georgia Society, Sons of the American Revolution in 2010 and his subsequent election as president of the organization's Button Gwinnett Chapter in 2012. He also shares his efforts to bring greater recognition to overlooked Revolutionary War Patriots, document his family's history, and encourage others to explore their own ancestry.

LOST BATTALION FOUND NEAR NEW HOPE CHURCH, The Leader-Enterprise and Press, Sep. 16, 1926, Fitzgerald, Ben Hill County, Georgia, p. 8.

It would be very interesting to know what became of their investigation at the time, if any records could be found.

Good news! We are pleased to announce the digitization of historical newspaper titles from six counties, expanding the Georgia Historic Newspaper Project to represent 157 of Georgia’s 159 counties.

The new titles from Walker, Bacon, Lanier, Tattnall, Telfair, and Twiggs counties help fill critical gaps in the state’s historical record, giving researchers, genealogists, and the public access to local stories and archives.

The digitized collections are available via the Digital Library of Georgia and are freely accessible to anyone with an internet connection.
