Mayor Mike Rawlings

Mayor Mike Rawlings Mike Rawlings is the former Mayor of Dallas. Mike Rawlings came to Dallas in 1976 with a couple hundred dollars in his pocket and plans to work as a radio reporter.

He didn't think he'd stay long. But over the next four decades, Rawlings proved that Dallas is truly a city of opportunity. Today, Mike Rawlings is the 61st mayor of Dallas and the longest-serving mayor in more than 45 years. During his time in office, he has focused on spurring economic development in the long-overlooked southern portion of Dallas through his GrowSouth initiative, improving public education, combatting poverty and domestic violence, developing parks, elevating the city's international profile and turning Dallas into a top destination for artists, young professionals, families and corporations. A Borger, Texas, native and proud Boston College graduate, Mayor Rawlings worked his way up from an entry-level position at TracyLocke, then the largest advertising agency in the South, to become the CEO. Later, he took the helm of the world's largest pizza company, Pizza Hut, and grew it to record sales. He previously served as Chairman and Managing Partner of private equity firm CIC Partners, where he is currently the vice chairman. During the seven years that Mayor Rawlings has led the ninth-largest city in America, Dallas has experienced tremendous economic growth. The city’s labor force has grown every year since Rawlings took office and unemployment was reported to be 3.3 percent as of December 2017, the 34th consecutive month that Dallas outperformed the national and state unemployment rate. New building permit valuations reached a minimum of $2 billion annually in the past six fiscal years and at least $4 billion in each of the last three fiscal years. The city’s property tax base value rose more than 7 percent in the current fiscal year to $118.3 billion, from $110.4 billion the prior year. The success is not confined to one area of the city, as the mayor’s GrowSouth initiative has led to major progress in southern Dallas. For the first time since the initiative launched, the growth in taxable value in southern Dallas outpaced that of northern Dallas in 2016. Since 2012, real property values increased nearly 44 percent in southern Dallas and annual residential investment topped $163 million. Mayor Rawlings also continues to keep Dallas in the national and international spotlight, serving as an executive committee member for the U.S. Conference of Mayor and traveling the globe as a member of the DFW Airport Board of Directors. Public service has long been important to Mayor Rawlings. In the years before his 2011 election as mayor, he served as the Chair of the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau (VisitDallas), the city's Homeless Czar and president of the Dallas Park Board. Voters re-elected Mayor Rawlings by a wide margin in 2015 to his second and final four-year term, which runs through June 2019. Rawlings and his wife, Micki, live in the Preston Hollow neighborhood of Dallas. Their daughter, Michelle, an artist, and their son, Gunnar, and his wife, Gaby, also live in Dallas.

We just completed our final City Council meeting to officially accept the results of the 2019 elections.

Thank you all for serving. It’s been the greatest honor of my life to work with you.

06/11/2019

We tackled some huge issues during my time as mayor, including poverty, homelessness, education, workforce development, and domestic violence. Of course, much work remains. But we made great progress on these and other issues thanks to servant leaders who generously gave their time, money and resources. These are some of the people and organizations who deserve our thanks for their great work these past eight years.

Micki and I are devastated to learn of Alan’s passing. I met Alan more than 25 years ago when I was an ad executive. We remained friends over the years. He was always a gentleman and he cherished the job he had at The Dallas Morning News for 30 years. We will miss him. Dallas will miss him.

Important storm aftermath information - Dallas City News

Important update on this afternoon’s storm:

Today’s storms did affect 911 call centers across the region, including at one point, in the City of Dallas. The City of Dallas call center is now operational and 9-1-1 calls are being answered. Due to the high call volume, some residents may receive a busy signal, we are encouraging residents to please hang up and call back immediately.

For residents without power, the following libraries are open: Central Library, Hampton-Illinois, and Polk-Wisdom. We are working to activate additional sites as needed.

Latino Cultural Center has been activated as a respite center for residents without power or in need. City of Dallas Office of Emergency Management has also activated a command center at the Latino Cultural Center. OEM is coordinating efforts with Dallas Fire Rescue, Dallas Police Department, and the Red Cross as well as the property management of the collapsed building in the Live Oak area.

Love Field Airport also experienced damage including, the Southwest Airlines Hangar. Southwest Airlines had 27 cancellations due to weather diversions. There were also issues with power. With the exception of trees, there has not been any identifiable damage to City property as of yet.

City crews are continuing to assess the areas impacted.

In addition, first responders remain on site near the collapsed building in the Live Oak area and we continue to work with local and state authorities to ensure that our response is appropriate and we maintain the safety of others in the area.

Residents are still being urged to call 3-1-1 immediately to report downed trees or any other flooded areas. The City’s social media sites are being updated with this information.

Dallas has faced some adversities in the last several years - from Ebola and the Dallas police ambush to opening up shelters to help victims of Hurricane Harvey. People often ask, “how do you lead during trying times?” By having a strong support system - our faith community. These are the faith leaders who I can call on anytime for counsel. They pray, volunteer, provide resources and much more.

The arts in Dallas are now an $891 million industry. That’s almost three times what it was just nine years ago. And while we have the largest contiguous arts district in the nation to be proud of, we are also seeing so much activity in our neighborhoods. We really are in a period of “cultural explosion,” as Forbes said. We are a young, creative and vibrant city with a brilliant future thanks to the efforts of these people:

Thank you to our GrowSouth supporters

We have seen incredible growth in southern Dallas over the last eight years, and people now understand that southern Dallas is truly an investment opportunity. There is so much to celebrate, including the revitalization of Red Bird, Trinity Groves, Jefferson Boulevard, UNT Dallas and the education corridor, the Cedars and so much more. But the best part of southern Dallas is something that has been there since long before I became mayor--it’s the people who live, work, and have endless passion for that beautiful area of our city. The GrowSouth effort is monumental and would not have been possible without the combined efforts of business, philanthropic, and community leaders:

“While it’s important to integrate, don’t lose your uniqueness just for the sake of fitting in. You don't have to be like everybody else. With my time as your mayor coming to a close after eight years, I want to recognize some of the great people who have given their time to support our work in moving Dallas forward. One of the great things about this city is that the spirit of giving is so deeply ingrained in the Dallas DNA. I couldn’t have done this job without the help of so many. In the coming days, I’ll be highlighting the work we’ve done and some of the people who have given so much time and energy to make Dallas a better place.

We’ll start with our board and commission members, the dozens of people who volunteered their time to advise and rule on matters of great importance, including zoning, animal welfare, ethics, police reform, homelessness, historic preservation, senior affairs, parks and recreation and much more. Thank you to the following board and commission appointees who served me during my two terms in office:

Texas House and Senate strike deal on bill to fund schools, teacher pay raises, tax relief

I’ve spent the past eight years as mayor of Dallas doing all that I could to support the innovation within Dallas ISD. It’s gratifying to see many of their bold reforms incorporated into the overhaul of Texas’ school finance system. As we’ve seen in Dallas, strategically investing more in our students pays dividends for years to come. Thanks to both the leadership in the Legislature and the year-long work that preceded this legislative session through the Commission on Public School Finance, Texas should be proud of what HB3 represents for all of our kids.

I.M. Pei is one of the most prolific architects in the world, and we in Dallas are lucky to be home to a beautiful skyline and one of the world's greatest concert halls because of him. I'm also lucky that I've gotten to work in one of his buildings for the past eight years.

The Dallas Municipal Archives pays tribute to architect IM Pei, who transformed the built landscape of Dallas and many cities worldwide. Pei's death this week at 102 marks the end of a generation of visionary architects who changed the face of architecture in the 20th century. In addition to Dallas City Hall and the Meyerson Symphony Center, Pei left an indelible print upon Dallas with One Dallas Center and Allied Bank Tower/Fountain Place. The Municipal Archives extends its condolences to Pei's family, friends, and colleagues.

Good afternoon, Mr. Mayor. My brother, Wayne Hardey wrote about his chance meeting with you while on your morning walks. I recommend his story. I’m sure it will make you smile.
Hello Mike, Let’s see how much strength you have to listen to the truth. You bought a company with your inept managing partner and ran it into bankruptcy. I am the founder, and have since been brought back. Seeing first hand the stain you put on my company and then drive it into bankruptcy is solely to the incompetence of Your partner Fouad Brashur. You might have saved lives as a mayor but the bullets I saw your regime put into talented people is at best a wash for you. Your decision to put your trust in Fouad Brashur and Rob Doran cost you the thing that is most important in life. Your integrity. Shame on you, Steve Wagenheim Founder and President Granite City

To The UTD Community and Provost: GOVERNOR ABBOTT PLEASE TELL RICHARD BENSON TO KEEP THE COMMUNICATION LINES OPEN, AND NOT TO BLOCK MY EMAILS UNTIL MY SUICIDAL DEATH ON MARCH 15, 2020. RICHARD BENSON YOU DESTROYED MY DREAMS, KICKED ME OUT OF SCHOOL, DESTROYED MY LIFE, IMPRISONED ME WRONGLY, AND FORCED ME INTO SUICIDE. I HAVE JUST BEGUN TALKING TO YOU. I HAVE SO MUCH THINGS I HAVE TO SAY TO YOU. SO DO NOT BLOCK MY EMAILS. I am following up on my emails to burn into the memory of the UTD community and register my grievance against (1) Richard Benson, (2) Randall Holton, (3) Dean Hasan Pirkul, (4) Dean Monica Powell, (5) Dean Laura Smith, (6) Dean Amanda Smith, (7) Tiffany Bortz, (8) Tom Kim, (9) Hubert Zydorek, (10) Jennifer McDowell, and (11) Jacob Varghese and demand that these persons should be fired without any retirement income consideration given to them. Richard Benson took my KPMG internship wrongfully from me, and imprisoned me on the pretext that he felt threatened. He sent Randall Holton to arrest me from my on-campus apartment with guns and ammunition as if I were a gunman, and then threw me in prison. When asked by the court to testify how I threatened the life of Richard Benson and how Richard Benson will feel threatened by me, Richard Benson refused to testify knowing fully well that he would have lied under oath. Richard Benson then got his surrogates to kick me out of school on the charge that he felt threatened, which is the very charge Richard Benson failed to appear in court to testify. Richard Benson's action rendered me homeless, forced me to lose my possessions and live on the streets homeless despite paying my on-campus rent on time for 18 months. I have attached to this email, Richard Benson's integrity on this issue. Richard Benson is part of the reason I am COMMITTING SUICIDE ON MARCH 15, 2020. RICHARD BENSON AND THE PERSONS MENTIONED IN THIS EMAIL HAVE FORCED ME INTO COMMITTING SUICIDE. RICHARD BENSON MUST GO. RICHARD BENSON MUST GO. RICHARD BENSON MUST GO. RICHARD BENSON MUST GO. RICHARD BENSON MUST GO. We the Professors and Students of the University of Texas at Dallas join CLIFFORD UZOR in prayer and spiritual solidarity to express our strongest call for the removal of (1) Richard Benson, (2) Randall Holton, (3) Dean Hasan Pirkul, (4) Dean Monica Powell, (5) Dean Amanda Smith, (6) Dean Laura Smith, (7) Jennifer McDowell, (8) Jacob Varghese, (9) Tiffany Bortz, (10) Hubert Zydorek, and (11) Tom Kim. Heavenly Father, I do not have power to fight this man Richard Benson, and this society. I do not have the guns and ammunition that the police in this country have to protect perpetrators of hatred from the consequence of hurting people like us in this society. Heavenly Father I have you. And You are more powerful than this White Society. Heavenly Father you are above the name Richard Benson, President Barack Obama, President George Bush, Governor Abbott, and President Clinton. So in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I bring the cruelty of this society towards me from living in this society for 22 years and knowing nothing other than rejections, denials, and homelessness, the forced homelessness rendered to me by the refusal to grant me a job after completion of my master's degree in accounting, the FORCED SUICIDAL DEATH RENDERED TO ME BY RICHARD BENSON, AND CRY TO YOU FOR JUSTICE AND SPEAK FORTH AN EF5 TORNADO ON THE CAMPUS OF UTD THAT WILL KILL A LOT OF PEOPLE FOR WHICH RICHARD BENSON AND OTHERS SHOULD BE CHARGED WITH MURDER.
