Chick-fil-A Prestonwood joined yesterday’s food distribution line to hand out breakfast to community members in need, jumped in to help load boxes into cars, and helped us to thank our volunteers and staff for their hard work by coming back with lunches in the afternoon!

Thank you Chick-Fil-A for being a great neighbor to JFS and working to make a difference in our community!

The pandemic’s next blow: Over 1 million Texans will lose health insurance

"Half who lose their jobs and employer health plans are
expected to go without coverage in Texas — far worse than the rest of the U.S.

In that scenario, 25 million adults and children in the U.S. are expected to lose employer-sponsored health insurance. The vast majority — 7 in 10 nationwide — will get coverage elsewhere, the study estimated. But in Texas, just 1 in 2 are projected to be covered, which would be the lowest share
among the states."

The worst is about to get worse. In Texas, where 5 million people already go without health insurance, nearly 1.2 million more are projected to join their...

Our Industry isn’t coming back like yours is.

Like many of you, we are sending support to all those who's livelihoods are affected by COVID-19 closures. Our hearts go out to workers in the event industry who, even after restrictions are lifted, will have a long journey back to some sense of normalcy for work. We see you. We are here for you. If you live in Dallas and need assistance please call us at 972 437 9950 x340.

"During this season, our industry can’t easily pivot to make ends meet. We can’t offer curbside pickup. We don’t have the ability to just reopen a smaller event. Like we have so many times before at shows, wearing all black and working behind the scenes, we now sit, again, in the shadows."

Live events aren’t getting the acknowledgement that others are.

We’re seeing a 30% increase in depression among the people we serve due to the coronavirus pandemic. Thanks to Bank of America’s emergency grant funding, we are able to provide more counseling and telehealth services to seniors and their caregivers in the greater Dallas area. We’ve also expanded our services to serve 285 seniors in order to help prevent food insecurity.

The financial fallout from COVID-19 is forcing Americans to make hard calls

“Many people have had to totally rethink their lifestyle,” said Jacobs, a lead career coach [at Jewish Family Service of Greater Dallas].

He encourages clients to play “a long game,” starting with re-evaluating their skills and reassessing the labor market. They may have to target different jobs and industries with an eye toward so-called essential businesses.

Marital spats on the rise? Defuse them by avoiding this 1 word

Small excerpt: When people are trapped with each other, he explains, “they start to get caught in a little bit of a downward spiral and then they think that their feelings are justified and they're right and they start to lash out at the people around them. And then their thought patterns are ‘of course I'm angry, I'm entitled to be angry,’ and they're even more convinced that they're right. So the first problem is getting out of the downward spiral.” Read on to find out some positive tips to help in confrontation with loved ones.

As we continue into May, our counselors and case managers are still here to support the individuals and children that are facing family violence while under shelter-in-place orders for COVID-19. We can help provide resources, therapy, direct referrals, and limited transitional housing options.

Many domestic violence hotlines have shared that in March calls spiked — then dropped below normal in April. Those at home with abusers during the pandemic, may be unable to get help.

If you can, donate today at http://bit.ly/givetojfs and please share this post.

If you or someone you love needs help call our intake line at (972) 437-9950x340.

Forget ageism, older workers now have to survive the coronavirus economy

Our director of career and financial services, Allison Harding, spoke with Mitchell Schnurman at The Dallas Morning News regarding 65+ workers through COVID-19.

Companies are most concerned about whether their employees are willing and able to return from working at home, according to a chamber survey of about 100 members. The most common response to the COVID lockdown was to have people work remotely.

But in the past, fewer older workers have had that option. Just over 25% of employees 65-plus could have worked from home from 2017 to 2018, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. For 35- to 45-year-olds, over 36% could work from home.

“With hiring managers, the big fear is lower productivity,” said Allison Harding, director of career and financial services at Jewish Family Service of Greater Dallas.

Service Delivery Update: The JFS Food Pantry will reopen with new measures in place beginning Friday, May 1.

For the last month we have continued to feed clients remotely by providing grocery gift cards, helping them to shop online and/or providing them with information on other partner drive up locations.

Beginning this Friday, May 1, the JFS Food Pantry will reopen, to provide contactless food distribution to more than 200 families. After this week, our distributions will continue to be one time per week, but on Thursdays. We will be handing out pre-packaged food boxes from our partner, the North Texas Food Bank. First come, first served.

The drive thru distribution will be run by staff only at this time. We appreciate your support and desire to volunteer. Due to our very limited space in the pantry and in support of social distancing guidelines, we want to minimize the number of people working in the pantry. As we begin the process of more fully reopening the pantry, we will send out notifications to our volunteers as to how they can help.

We understand the need for rules and consistent enforcement of them. We cannot and do not object to that. However, fundamentally what we know is that separating children from their parents is wrong. The trauma that it works on the family is devastating; the effects on the children can be long term and lead to chronic illness for life. We also understand that these children are not the cause of any of our problems and should not be bearing the brunt of a broken system. Jewish Family Service is an open door to all in need, regardless of ability to pay and regardless of the possession of papers. Each individual life is worthy of respect, and those who have risked their lives to travel from abuse, violence and oppression deserve to be treated with the dignity that their journey commands. We cannot accept that this is what America, Texas, or Dallas is about. Each child should be with his or her family. Let’s start with that as a basis and move forward from there.
