Today, we remember. Always, we honor.
Ten years ago, the Southern Methodist University campus community lost Police Officer Calvin “Mark” McCullers in the line of duty. Mark was more than an officer. He was a United States Marine, a devoted husband and father, a trusted teammate, and a faithful friend.
He was known for his discipline, professionalism, attention to detail, and unwavering commitment to serving others. He prepared relentlessly, not because anyone expected it, but because he believed his fellow officers and the SMU community deserved his very best. His legacy is not defined solely by the day we lost him, but by the life he lived. A life marked by integrity, humility, service, and sacrifice.
Today, we especially honor Mark’s wife, Tiffany, his daughter, Chaney, and their family. Your strength continues to inspire us, and we remain forever grateful for the sacrifices your family has made. As we commemorate the tenth anniversary of Mark’s end of watch, we renew our commitment to remember not only how he died, but how he lived, and to carry forward the values he embodied every day.
The SMU Police Department posthumously presents the Award for Valor to Officer Calvin “Mark” McCullers in recognition of his exceptional bravery, courageous service, and unwavering commitment to the protection of others. On July 5, 2016, while serving his community in the performance of duty, Officer McCullers made the ultimate sacrifice. His courage, devotion to duty, and enduring example reflect great credit upon himself, his family, the SMU Police Department, and Southern Methodist University.
Officer McCullers will always be a part of the SMU family. His service mattered. His life mattered. His sacrifice will never be forgotten.
