Be sure to turn sprinklers OFF. Many areas received more than 2 inches of rain over the last 24 hours with some spots getting over 8 inches. The heavy rainfall has now moved through but there is a small chance of more every day this week. Temperatures will be in the high 80s later this weekend. The Weekly Watering Advice uses the best available information from local weather stations to calculate your lawn watering needs. A rain gauge and soil moisture meter are two tools that can also help manage your outdoor water use.

Depending on the region, homeowners use between 30 and 70 percent of their water outdoors. Experts estimate that 50 percent of the water we use outdoors goes to waste from evaporation, wind, or runoff due to overwatering.

No matter what kind of yard or landscape you have, it's important to know exactly how much water your plants need before you turn on the sprinkler. Smart watering practices reduce runoff and may decrease the need for pesticides and fertilizers. Visit our When it’s Hot page for water saving tips at https://www.epa.gov/watersense/when-its-hot.
