Elmwoof

Elmwoof Elmwood's monthly pop-up dog park is becoming a permanent dog park! A great place to let the pup off the leash and meet new friends. ElmWoof began on April 27, 2013 as a monthly pop-up demonstration project by Mark Lea, Kenneth Denson and other members of the Elmwood Neighborhood Association (ENA) to celebrate GOOD, Inc.’s first-ever Neighborday.

The event and subsequent pop-ups were successful and proved the need for a permanent dog park south of the Trinity River.

Dear Elmwoof supporters: It is with great excitement that we announce the launch of our Phase One Campaign. In 2017, we won a match grant from Heritage Oak Cliff that was contingent on us raising just over $4,000 by June 2019. We have already raised half of that, but we need your help with the rest. Please give what you can so that we're able to meet the deadline and begin to purchase materials and get to work. We're eager to get started!

More information is available on our website. To donate, go to www.elmwoof.org

Elmwood Committee Lands Grant for Dog Park

Happy to finally share this news!

Elmwood Committee Lands Grant for Dog Park In the last year many Elmwood neighbors have expressed an interest in resurrecting the Elmwoof pop-up events from a few years ago and eventually having a permanent dog park. The location is a triangular island next to Margaret B. Henderson Element

Quick update on your future Oak Cliff dog park: Since March of this year, a committee from the Elmwood Neighborhood Association has been working to navigate this project through City Hall, design a permanent enclosure and apply for grants to get phase one off the ground.

The reason this project stalled in 2015 was due to a land ownership question at 2100 S. Edgefield Ave. that went unresolved until this year. Now that we've contacted the heirs of the original 1920s landowner, we are working with City Hall to properly survey this parcel and have it donated to the Parks Department. Unfortunately we don’t have a timeline to share at this time, but we’ll keep you updated as news comes in. Stay tuned! 🐶

Help find a home for LBJ and Lady Bird!

Pup-date: These two have been tagged by Paws in the City and Tara, a local OC resident, will foster them until they can be adopted out. Hurray!!! All within our 72 hours. Way to go everyone - thanks for all the shares and help. We’ll keep sharing updates because they two will still need forever homes!! Today, they are safe and LBJ is going to get the heartworm treatment he needs. Thank you @Paws in the City!!!

Original Post:
Please SHARE - 72 hour timeline! (from Wed night)

Meet local celebrities LBJ and Lady Bird! These two have been hanging out in the bushes behind a church at the corner of Illinois and Tyler. No more. Now they are ready for your help!

Tara, a new OC resident, reached out to us for help catching the love birds. She got them on a feeding schedule and we caught them today and were able to get them in the dog mobile and onto DAS.

They have 72 hours to find their owners, a new potential family, or a foster. Can you help us spread the word? A first great step is a foster. Once we have a foster we can reach out to various rescues and see who can take them into their programs and pull them from the shelter. But we only have 72 hours!!! Can you foster these two sweeties?

They are both a little shy but warmed up quickly. Lady Bird is the shepherd mix dog and LBJ is the smaller red and white mix. She is between 1-2 years old. He is a little older, maybe 3? We didn’t get a good look at his back teeth, we’ll see what the vets say when he gets checked in. They both have fun personalities and will make great dogs with a little TLC.

This was Tara’s original post on nextdoor: "One male and one female. Male looked like a cattle hound mix and female like a German Shepherd mix. Although they let me get close the female with skittishly back away. The male had no interest in me. I called 311, and a neighbor told me she's called at least three times. Apparently they've been the street for over year together. The female had 10 pups and the neighbor was able to rescue 3 of them and bring them to the shelter. I feel so sad for them."

Please SHARE our post so they can get out of the shelter and find forever homes!

Many of you know Elmer, who was rescued off the streets of Elmwood & rehabbed. He's in an awesome, forever home, but I get to remain his pet sitter! I'll have him Fri-Sun afternoon & was thinking of getting some folks together for a play date, at the ElmWoof site (2100 S Edgefield). It's supposed to be clear tomorrow, but to allow time for the ground to dry up, was thinking of 3pm. Is anyone interested? Elmer is really a great dog & loves the dog park. Please post below or just show up tomorrow, at 3pm. :) - Carlin

The ground is so wet from last night's rain, with more expected later today. We're going to go ahead and cancel today's event, but we'll get it rescheduled asap.

How to Build a Better Neighborhood

A big thanks to Jason Roberts and Andrew Howard, for everything they do for Oak Cliff...and the world!

"Using the same weekend approach, Oak Cliff residents also started a pop-up dog park movement. The city had originally claimed that dog parks required several acres of land, but the first pop-up park (on far less land) is now becoming permanent, and others are starting."

The group Better Block is proving that improvised, cheap D.I.Y. weekend block parties can jump-start transformations to more people-centered urban areas.

Annual Christmas Bazaar. The Church in the background behind the ELMWOOF Sign, Elmwood El Buen Samaritano United Methodist Church on Berkley (across from Margaret B. Henderson Elementary) usually has a big Christmas Bazaar around this time. It is one of our major fundraisers every year. In lieu of the in-person Bazaar this year, we are selling items on Facebook. There are lots of Christmas items, toys for kids, Christmas dresses for little girls, pecans and pupusas for sale. GREAT DOG HOUSE, Bow Wow! It's all listed on our page. There will also be a raffle for a beautiful handmade quilt. Please support us in your neighborhood! You'll have to scroll down to see all the items. Here's the link: https://www.facebook.com/EEBSUMC

Will the park be cleaned before the grand opening? We went yesterday and I picked up an entire handful of broken glass throughout the park. Would hate to see a dog get hurt...
