Celebrate Freedom Week - Caldwell Celebrates America's 250th Anniversary

Nearly 500 kindergarten through fifth-grade students at Caldwell Dual Language Academy spent the day celebrating America’s history and their own futures. As part of the school’s Liberty in Action event, students explored the American Revolution, the U.S. Constitution, and the diverse people who helped shape the nation through interactive learning experiences presented in partnership with local chapters of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

While learning about the past, Caldwell's students also turned their thoughts toward the future by dressing as the professions they hope to pursue one day.

The day began with a school wide assembly featuring a Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard, Constitution Week recognition, a special flag presentation and participation in the nationwide Bells Across America observance.

Throughout the day, students rotated through engaging stations focused on the American Revolution, the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, Texas history, citizenship, and geography.

Built around the theme “E Pluribus Unum: Out of Many, One,” the event is part of the nationwide commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary and Constitution Week, helping students connect history, civic responsibility, and their own roles in shaping the future.

McKinney ISD has released its 2025–2026 McKinney Accountability System report, providing families, staff and the community with a comprehensive look at district performance and progress based on the educational outcomes identified as priorities by the McKinney community.

The McKinney Accountability System is McKinney ISD’s Community-Based Accountability System (CBAS), an approach designed with input from students, parents, educators and community members to provide a broader picture of the work taking place across the district.

While state accountability ratings provide important information about student performance on standardized assessments, the McKinney Accountability System complements those measures by examining additional indicators that reflect the priorities and expectations of the local community.

“Our community has been clear that student success is about more than a single test or a single measure,” said McKinney ISD Superintendent Shawn Pratt. “The McKinney Accountability System allows us to look more comprehensively at how we are serving students, where we are making progress and where we have opportunities to improve. Most importantly, it provides transparency and accountability around the outcomes our community has told us matter most.”

The development of the McKinney Accountability System began in fall 2023 as part of the district’s Strategic Plan and McKinney ISD’s work with the Texas Public Accountability Consortium (TPAC). Through community surveys, stakeholder committees and conversations with students, parents, staff and community members, the district worked to identify the areas stakeholders believe are most important to a high-quality educational experience.

Those priorities became the foundation for the indicators included in the McKinney Accountability System and are aligned with the goals and strategies outlined in the McKinney ISD Strategic Plan.

The annual report is designed to do more than provide a snapshot of where McKinney ISD stands today. By reporting on the same community-defined indicators each year, the district can track performance and progress over time, celebrate areas of strength and identify opportunities for continued growth.
The result is a more complete story of McKinney ISD—one that incorporates multiple measures and perspectives while keeping the district focused on the educational outcomes and its community values.

Thank you to the McKinney Chamber of Commerce for bringing education and business leaders together for its inaugural State of Education.

Superintendent Shawn Pratt joined Frisco ISD Superintendent Dr. Todd Fouche and moderator, and former superintendent, Dr. Jamie Wilson for an important conversation about the opportunities and challenges facing public education, including school finance, teacher recruitment and retention, student programs, career readiness and the critical connection between strong schools and a strong local workforce.

We appreciate the McKinney Chamber and our local business community for engaging in conversations about the future of education and workforce development in McKinney.

McKinney ISD Adopts Lower Property Tax Rate for 2026-27

The McKinney ISD Board of Trustees has set a total property tax rate of $1.0664 per $100 of taxable value for the 2026-27 fiscal year, a decrease from the $1.1043 tax rate adopted for 2025-26. The new tax rate represents a reduction of $0.0379, continuing the district's commitment to responsible financial stewardship while maintaining support for student programs, operations, and voter-approved capital investments.

"McKinney ISD remains focused on balancing the educational needs of our students with our responsibility to taxpayers," said Board President Amy Dankel. "The adopted tax rate reflects both state-mandated tax compression and the district's ongoing efforts to manage debt responsibly while continuing to invest in student success."

Dr. Shelly Spaulding Named 2026 National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) Learning & Liberty Legacy Leader

Dr. Shelly Spaulding, McKinney ISD Assistant Superintendent of Public Relations and Communications, has been named a 2026 National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) Learning and Liberty Legacy Leader. She was recognized at the district's administrative council meeting on Thursday, Sept. 17.

The recognition honors individuals for their positive impact on colleagues' careers and their work behind the scenes on behalf of public education and improved communication.

Spaulding is a champion of effective, transparent communication and meaningful engagement while investing in the growth of others. Under her leadership, the MISD Public Relations and Communications department earned 21 state awards from TSPRA and 6 national awards from NSPRA last year. She has led the department's effort to expand channels of communication through a heightened social media presence and increased and varied communication tailored to the needs of parents and staff, while bringing increased recognition to student and staff achievements.

This year, the communications department initiated an internship program to give MISD high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to gain additional experience in communications and to deploy and develop their talents in the areas of photography, journalism, social media, graphic design and video production.

Spaulding has played a key role in developing future campus and district leaders within MISD through her work with the McKinney ISD Leadership Academy, helping teachers and staff prepare for broader leadership roles to not only advance their careers but to also broaden their impact with students and families across the district.

McKinney ISD is excited and proud to celebrate this recognition of Spaulding's leadership and her positive impact on the district.

McKinney ISD Superintendent Shawn Pratt and MISD district leadership welcomed city and community leaders to the district's Community Event Center this morning for breakfast and a presentation about the upcoming McKinney ISD 2026 Bond Election.

This November, voters will consider a Bond Election and a Voter Approval Tax Ratification Election or VATRE. The bond will address facility improvements across the district, while the VATRE will provide operational funding for teacher compensation and student programs.
