DSA North Texas

DSA North Texas The official page for the North Texas chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), the largest socialist organization in the United States.

Democratic Socialists of America believe that both the economy and society should be run democratically to meet human needs, not to make profits for a few. We are a political and activist organization, not a party; through campus and community-based chapters DSA members use a variety of tactics, from legislative to direct action, to fight for reforms that empower working people.

Dallas budget season is in full force and the city council is still trying to funnel YOUR tax dollars into the police, mass surveillance, and scheme their way out of city hall — all while furloughing employees and cutting funding for vital community services like parks & rec.

This week’s public hearing and town hall are your chance to weigh in on FY 2026-27 before amendments are drafted and the final vote is taken.

Scroll through for the key dates, budget basics, and what’s at stake, including libraries, police overtime, taxes, and surveillance spending.

Paxton’s war on trans people violates the privacy and rights of all Texans. One of the examples is the Texas Women’s Privacy Bill.

The bill already exposes trans communities to increased violence from police officers and community vigilantes violently enforcing traditional gender roles in publicly owned spaces.

Ken Paxton made the law even more dangerous by starting a tip line where anybody has the power to report any supposed instance of a trans person using bathrooms that don’t conform to their birth assigned gender.

The tipline is a dangerous breach of privacy of all Texans. Cis people that don’t conform perfectly to gender stereotypes will be harmed.

Finally, the WPATH lawsuit threatens to criminalize speech affirming the veracity of trans gender affirming care. Paxton’s determination to infringe on the free speech of WPATH will provide the state with increased infrastructure to police Texan speech unless resisted by
our community.

While some Democrats in our community spout similar talking points to the fascistic venom Paxton will be spouting about trans people throughout his Senate campaign, Democratic Socialists of America North Texas affirms our solidarity with the trans and larger LGBTQ
communities and pledges to fight alongside our allies against Paxton’s attacks on the rights and liberties of said communities.

Last week, members of DSA North Texas spoke at the City of Dallas council meeting to make community voices heard…

And got a shout out from because of it 🫶🏻

Between this and The Dallas Morning News calling us radicals (damn straight), it’s clear we’re making waves with the city’s establishment 😮‍💨 Our radical talking points?

Asking for financial transparency and community input on how city taxpayer dollars are funneled into a continually over-bloated policy budget, and condemning ICE terror in our city streets and skies.

The city council is trying to manipulate their constituents into funding cop city despite their financial mismanagement, and they have remained SILENT on ICE kidnapped and trafficking our neighbors from our streets.

Choosing silence is choosing to be complicit. They may be afraid to speak up, but DSA is not.

DSA North Texas will continue to say loud and clear:
NO BOND FOR COP CITY ❗️
ABOLISH AND PROSECUTE ICE ❗️

The city of Dallas just released its budget. Layoffs and service cuts are on the table.

Over the past two weeks, DSA North Texas and other organizations have been meeting with community members across the city to talk about what we actually want to see in this budget before it gets decided without us.

Your city council member holds a budget town hall in your district, and it’s one of the few chances all year to tell them directly what matters to you.

Don’t know yours? Find it here: bit.ly/dallasbudget2026

So we’re doing Town Hall Socials! Come to your district’s budget town hall, then come debrief with us after over food and drinks. Bring your questions, bring your frustrations, bring a friend.

📍 District 1 — TONIGHT, 8/11, 7:15 PM — Donde Los Tacos
📍 District 6 — 8/20, 7:15 PM — El Patio
📍 Districts 9 & 14 — 8/20, 7:15 PM — Lakewood Landing

RSVP: Scan the QR code or at https://dsa-ntx.solidarity.tech/post-budget-town-hall-social

This isn’t the city manager’s budget to write alone. Show up to your town hall, say what you came to say, then come find us afterward.

The Dallas City Council is trying to strip accountability out of nearly $1 billion in NEW DEBT, and they’re trying to hide it from the people.

On August 3rd, a Finance Committee item — placed on the agenda by the City Manager, not the committee chair — would strike the supermajority requirement for council votes on municipal buildings. That protection exists so decisions this big can’t be pushed through by a bare majority. They’re trying to remove it in the middle of the fight over whether to sell or redevelop City Hall itself.

Meanwhile, the “training center” bond has grown from $140 million in 2021 to $441 million more, bundled into one vote with pension bonds, a new 911 center, and an evidence facility, so residents can’t weigh in on any single piece. The call to send it to November was made at 11:30 PM with the mayor absent for the roll call.

And where’s this money going? Straight into an already-bloated public safety budget while Dallas faces a $51 million shortfall, a hiring freeze, and the city is actively discussing cuts to libraries and parks & rec in this same budget cycle.

Dallas City Council keeps making billion-dollar decisions in briefings and late-night votes instead of in the open while telling residents there isn’t money for the things that actually make neighborhoods safer.

We can still fight back.

The Dallas Morning News says we’re “extremists Texas will not accept.”

Damn straight.

We’re not going to pretend the DMN Editorial Board misunderstood us. They understand exactly what we’re building. A working-class political organization independent of the Democratic Party, made up of the people they’d rather you forget: warehouse workers, renters, the folks the medical and legal systems fail every day.

They called us dangerous. We call it Tuesday.

Over 1,000 dues-paying members in North Texas and growing. Not because a newspaper approved of us. Because working people are done waiting on permission.

To the DMN Editorial Board: keep talking.

To everyone else: come join us. Link in bio.
