Family Compass

Family Compass Building healthy families and a strong North Texas community by preventing child abuse and neglect. Services are free of cost and participation is voluntary.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE -

Family Compass enters the lives of vulnerable children at-risk for abuse and supports their parents with one-on-one education, encouragement, and parenting tools. Our agency has a holistic, wrap-around approach and offers a continuum of care. We know why child abuse and neglect happen, the root causes being: a lack of parenting skills, high stress, and poor conditions in the

home and environment. To address these causes, child abuse prevention services are provided using two models: Home Mentoring and Community Education & Outreach. Both models work in synergy, providing a full range of support. Families may access multiple programs to meet their individual needs, some staying in services for up to 6 years. Our staff are there every step of the way, with accredited and evidence-based curricula, to guide clients in overcoming barriers to becoming healthy families and empowering them with life skills. Bilingual staff are represented in all of Family Compass’ programs and initiatives. We create sustainable change that flows into future generations and permanently breaks cycles of abuse. Family Compass ultimately increases resilience, self-esteem, social connection, emotional health, and stability for children. PROVEN RESULTS -

The CDC estimates that it costs society $831,000 per case to address child abuse over the lifetime of the child. As such, Family Compass saves the community millions of dollars each year by keeping hundreds of children out of the overburdened CPS system, most importantly preventing the trauma of child abuse and neglect. We listen with intention and provide steady guidance, ultimately empowering parents and instilling hope within families for future generations. Family Compass has served tens of thousands of parents and children since the agency's founding in 1992. The generous support of our donors and community partners allows us to provide these critical prevention services, proactively addressing the causes of child abuse before it can occur.

Be the moment that changes everything. 💙

For families working to build stability, it's the small moments — a laugh in the park, a quiet afternoon together — that mean the most. Family Compass walks alongside parents and children as they build stronger, more resilient futures, one moment at a time.

Your gift helps create these moments.

What if one moment changed everything for a child?

For Family Compass Board Chair Toni McReynolds, preventing Child abuse before it happens in more than a cause. It is a commitment to helping families build safer, stronger futures.

Change rarely happens in a single moment. It takes time, trust, and a community willing to show up for families. But your support can be the moment that makes that work possible.

Watch Toni share why she believes in prevention.
Then join us and Be the Moment for a family.

A child’s behavior is often telling us something.

What looks like “acting out” may be hunger, stress, big feelings, or a need for connection. Looking beyond the behavior can help parents understand what their child needs and respond with connection and support.

Before we call a child “naughty,” “defiant,” or “attention-seeking,” it can help to pause and ask a different question:

“What might they be trying to tell us?”

A meltdown may be exhaustion. Refusal may be anxiety. Anger may be overwhelm. Withdrawal may be a child who doesn’t yet have the words for what hurts.

Children can struggle with hunger, tiredness, sensory overload, big feelings, changes at home or school, communication difficulties, loneliness, or unmet needs. Their behaviour is not always a choice to make life difficult — sometimes it is the only way they know how to say, “I need help.”

This doesn’t mean ignoring harmful behaviour or having no boundaries. It means responding with curiosity as well as consequences, connection as well as correction.

The question is not only, “How do we stop this behaviour?”
It is also, “What does this child need from us right now?”

The first week of school is in the books! 📚✏️ It was wonderful seeing all the first-day-of-school posts. Now, the backpack zippers are getting a workout, the early mornings are starting to feel real, and families are settling into new routines.

As you head into the weekend, take a moment to celebrate the wins--even the small ones. A little encouragement, patience, and time to reconnect can help children feel supported as everyone adjusts to the new school year.

Here’s to a great year ahead and strong, healthy families! 💙
