Family Compass

Family Compass Our mission is to build healthy families and a strong North Texas community by preventing child abuse

Our mission is accomplished through two home mentoring programs and community based educational programs for families that have elevated risk for child abuse and reside in the poorest communities throughout Dallas and Collin County. All of our programs are evidence based, voluntary and free of charge. Family Compass believes that every child has the fundamental right to a healthy family and enviro

nment, the opportunity to succeed in school and the capacity to experience life without abuse or violence. Family Compass was first established as Child Abuse Prevention Center in 1992 as a result of escalating incidents of child abuse and a lack of services focused on primary prevention. The agency was founded by more than 400 Dallas Exchange Club members to serve this purpose and ensure safe homes in communities throughout North Texas. In 2012 we changed our name from Child Abuse Prevention Center to Family Compass. In November, 2014 we merged Family Outreach Richardson-Plano (FORP), a 41-year old non-profit with a similar mission, into our organization. We have provided critical child abuse prevention services in both Dallas and Collin Counties ever since under the Family Compass name. Since inception, Family Compass has served over 54,000 children and parents. We are the largest agency in North Texas with the sole focus on child abuse prevention. Additionally, all of our primary programs; Parent Aide, Healthy Families and Triple P Parenting Education have received national accreditation indicating that we implement these programs with the highest levels of fidelity. This year, 2022, we are proud to celebrate our 30th anniversary as an agency!

Our hearts are heavy.

It is with immense sadness that we share Amy McShane, Clinical Director of our Parent Aide Home Mentoring Program, passed away unexpectedly this week. We will miss Amy more than words can express.

Amy made such an incredible impact through her work at Family Compass over her 21-year tenure. Her steady mentorship was truly invaluable as the agency grew. The Parent Aide team emphasizes that her personable leadership style made all the difference. With true kindness and a positive nature, Amy’s impact is felt throughout our community in the healthy homes and families that graduated from programs with her oversight.

Under her direction, Parent Aide strengthened its program evaluation, added the use of evidence-based parenting curricula, Nurturing Families, and expanded into Collin County. She was also extensively involved in the community to further support the families we serve. Before Family Compass, she worked as a School Social Worker & Suicide/Crisis Counselor and then as a Case Manager for a therapeutic foster care agency in Baltimore.

It is evident how deeply Amy cared about the North Texas community and achieving positive outcomes for children and families. Amy was well connected with the National Exchange Club and local chapters. In particular, she was closely involved with the Exchange Club of Lake Highlands, our close partner with its role in founding Family Compass.

Spending time with family and pets, outdoor activities, watching sports, jigsaw puzzles, and reading filled her life with joy. She is deeply missed.

The McShane family is in our immediate thoughts and our hearts as we continue to carry Amy’s legacy and move forward in her honor.

Exchange Club of Lake Highlands, it was so great meeting with you last night!

More than 400 Exchange Club members united to open our agency in 1992 as a result of escalating incidents of child abuse and a lack of services focused on primary prevention in the community. The Exchange Club has left a stunning impact, allowing us to serve now over 56,000 parents and children to date with lifechanging services.

We are forever grateful to the Exchange Club for their ongoing support and are excited to honor our closest partners, Exchange Club of Lake Highlands, with our 2023 North Star Award at the 5th Annual North Star Luncheon, presented by ExxonMobil! The event will be held on Monday, April 24th at Dallas Country Club. Find more details and tickets at https://family-compass.org/events.

Drumroll please! 🥁

We are thrilled reveal further details about the 5th Annual North Star Luncheon, presented by ExxonMobil, happening at Dallas Country Club on Monday, April 25th! Erin Gruwell, teacher of the Freedom Writers and author, will join us as Guest Speaker in sharing her story and continued social justice activism work.

Erin Gruwell first gained national attention in 1998 when she and her 150 high school students were featured on ABC’s Primetime Live. The students, known as Freedom Writers, faced broken home lives affected by poverty and violence. Under Erin's guidance, the students overcame adversity to pursue higher education. In the two decades since, Erin has since grown her social justice activism into a movement, writing several books and adapting one into a major motion picture film. Erin's work has been recognized with several humanitarian awards, including the prestigious Spirit of Anne Frank Award. She and the Freedom Writers have received continued accolades, most recently with the Emmy Award-winning PBS documentary Freedom Writers: Stories from the Heart.

In celebration of her instrumental service as former Board Chair and current Advisory Board member, we are pleased to distinguish Candace Winslow as Honorary Chair. Former reporter, current V.P of Strategic Events and Relationships for Methodist Health System Foundation, and seventh-generation Texan, Calvert Collins-Bratton, will serve as our Emcee with the distinct pleasure of interviewing Gruwell.

Family Compass is also delighted to honor Exchange Club of Lake Highlands as the 2023 North Star Award recipient in recognition of their role in founding Family Compass 31 years ago. 400 members of local Exchange Clubs united against child abuse in North Texas by founding our agency in 1992. This wonderful event would not be possible without the support of our incredible Presenting Sponsor, ExxonMobil. We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to Mary Bowman Campbell, official VIP Sponsor of the 5th Annual North Star Luncheon.

Tables, tickets, and sponsorships are available! You will not want to miss this incredible event. Register now to secure your seat early. https://family-compass.org/events/

We recently honored one of our longest serving staff members, Griselda Montiel, Bilingual Community Educator, for her 10-year anniversary! What an awesome milestone! Congratulations.

She continues to uplift countless families by guiding them in reaching parenting goals and aiding in school-readiness. Our community would simply not be the same without Griselda. She constantly goes above and beyond! ✨ As a token of our gratitude, the agency gifted her an Aveda spa experience.

Celebrations were held at our staff holiday party. The cherry on top has to be Griselda's team, Community Education & Outreach, winning the big title for the outfit competition. Well-deserved for an all-out choreographed performance! 🕺🪩

The holiday spirit was in full swing this Saturday as we hosted our annual party for families. 🎅

It was a joy to see families receive gifts for each of their children and gift cards from North Dallas Bank & Trust Co. The children were super excited to enter to win awesome bikes too! We love that parents can pick out something special for themselves with a gift card from East Dallas Christian Church as well. Self-care is so important!

Santa posed with families for keepsake photos while the elves kept the hot cocoa and treat stand fully stocked. It was a magical day all thanks to volunteer support from our Board of Directors, The Mike and Mary Terry Family Foundation, Marquis on Gaston, and NDBT.

Exchange Club of Lake Highlands hosted an awesome holiday party last night! We were thrilled to honor past Family Compass Board President Jon Deats for his incredible service these past few years.

More than 400 Exchange Club members united to form our agency 30 years ago as a result of escalating incidents of child abuse and a lack of services focused on primary prevention in the community. The Exchange Club has left a stunning impact, allowing us to serve over 55,000 parents and children to date with lifechanging services. We are forever grateful to the Exchange Club for their ongoing support!

Members donated a massive mountain of diapers yesterday, several rows deep. What a blessing for our families! To top it all off, the club presented a generous check in support of our programs. WOW.

We truly cannot thank you enough, Exchange Club of Lake Highlands! Happy holidays to all! https://lhexchangeclub.org

We recently visited a very special statue, Time Together by Gary Lee Price Studio, on a rainy day at Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. Dodee and Billy Crockett dedicated this heartfelt piece to Family Compass in 2019. We adore how the statue captures the essence of childhood and precious moments together as a family!

Dodee is one of the founders of our agency and continues to serve as an Advisory Board Member. She and Billy also started the Founders Giving Circle to leave a legacy. We are deeply grateful for their continued commitment to our mission. https://family-compass.org/donate/founders

Huge congratulations to Griselda Montiel, Bilingual Community Educator, on her milestone 10th anniversary at Family Compass! 🥳 Griselda has made such an impact throughout the years and we are grateful to have her on board.

She previously served as Bilingual Parent Educator in our GAP program (Growing as Parents) before moving into Community Education & Outreach. This past April, Dallas Child Abuse Prevention Coalition (CAPCO) named Griselda for its 2022 Child Abuse Prevention Leadership Award! She was selected from a pool of nominees because of her outstanding leadership and commitment to the prevention of child abuse. This is such a huge accomplishment, and we are so proud of Griselda!
