In September 1984, DART began express bus service between downtown Dallas and Plano and added local bus service a year later. In 1989, DART opened the West Plano Transit Center (now named for community leader Jack Hatchell), followed by the East Plano Transit Center in 1992. The latter would become the location of the future Parker Road Station on the Red Line, which opened in December 2002, along with Downtown Plano Station. In 2012, DART opened the Northwest Plano Park & Ride, a bus-only facility designed to serve the westernmost area of the city.

Today, Plano has two light rail stations, two park-and-ride facilities, six bus routes, and six GoLink zones. DART Rail helped spark a renaissance in the city’s historic downtown, attracting several mixed-use apartment communities, condos, shops, art galleries, restaurants, and regular community programming. Today, DART is building two Silver Line stations at Shiloh Road and 12th Street, and the agency will also construct its first aerial infill station at 12th Street Station.

The first segment of DART's long-anticipated Orange Line to Irving opened in July 2012, which added three new stations to the DART Rail System: University of Dallas, Las Colinas Urban Center, and Irving Convention Center. Later that year, that Dallas College North Lake Campus Station (formerly North Lake College Station) and Belt Line Station opened. The Orange Line reached its terminus in August 2014 with the opening of DFW Airport Station at Terminal A.

DART and the City of Irving opened a new station – Hidden Ridge Station at Carpenter Ranch – in April 2021. This infill station was built to serve Verizon Communications’ Hidden Ridge development, including Pioneer Natural Resources regional office. The 110-acre mixed-use project is planned to include apartments and residences, restaurants, retail space, a hotel, and a two-acre green space with amenities when it is complete.

Highland Park and University Park residents were among the thousands that went to the polls to vote in favor of a one-cent local sales tax on August 13, 1983 – the measure that created DART. In 2013, the agency began offering DART On-Call service, a reservation-based neighborhood shuttle service, that provided transportation in Highland Park and University Park.

In 2023, Highland Park and University Park are represented on the DART Board of Directors by Vice Chair Gary A. Slagel, who also represents Addison and Richardson. Today, the Park Cities GoLink zone provides convenient on-demand service to work and play destinations throughout Highland Park and University Park, including spots such as the Inwood Village and Highland Park Village shopping centers. The service also connects riders to the DART Rail System at SMU/Mockingbird Station. In addition to GoLink, Bus Route 237 provides service within the Park Cities.

DART Installs Electric Vehicle Chargers at Two Transit Centers

For over 40 years, Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) has worked to promote a culture of sustainable planning, project development, operations, and maintenance. In collaboration with the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG), DART has installed electric vehicle charging stations at the Glenn Heights Park & Ride and Illinois Station locations.

“By bringing these electric vehicle charging stations to an area that doesn’t have this service, DART is implementing sustainable technologies across our service area.” explained Nadine Lee, DART president & CEO. “We will continue to work with other agencies, stakeholders, and organizations to find opportunities to bring improvements to our riders and communities.”

The Blink Series 8 Dual Port Level 2 Chargers can charge a typical electric vehicle within 4-8 hours, making it a great option for transit users with electric vehicles to park and charge during the day. The dual charging ports allow two cars to charge simultaneously and are free to use through August 31, 2024.

“With the purchase of electric vehicles on the rise due to consumer preferences, auto industry trends, and potential requirements set by governing bodies - local governments will have to begin to think about how to make their cities EV ready,” said Keith Moore, Glenn Heights interim city manager.

Moore went on to say that DART’s decision to place EV Charging Stations within the DART Park and Ride located in Glenn Heights sets the city ahead of the curve as they can already provide a convenient charging location for residents, which can also result in significant cost savings over time for drivers. He also expressed that he was “delighted that DART chose Glenn Heights as one of the first DART cities to provide these services in.”

The installation of these electric vehicle charging stations was made possible by a $79,472 grant award under the NCTCOG Electric Vehicle Charging Station Call for Projects program using Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) funds.

These first installations will allow DART to better understand usage, benefits, and costs of the program to inform a broader expansion strategy throughout the DART Service Area.

DART began new non-stop express bus service between downtown Dallas and Glenn Heights in September 1984. The Glenn Heights Park & Ride is the southernmost transit center in the DART System.
In March 2016, DART and Glenn Heights officials introduced a new “wrapped bus” designed to highlight expanded DART On-Call service in the city. With the opening of the Blue Line extension to UNT Dallas, DART also expanded Glenn Heights on-call service to connect to the station.
Glenn Heights’ former DART On-Call service is now GoLink – DART’s on-demand, curb-to-curb microtransit service. In addition to GoLink, DART service in the city includes Glenn Heights Express Route 306 and paratransit. Ridership remains steady in the city and in Q2 FY 2023, ridership was at 12,507.

DART's story is one of movement. DART had a vision for connecting more than just people and places, it wanted to serve as a vehicle to opportunity, progress, and growth.

From its first bus routes in the 1980s to the construction of the Silver Line today, DART continues to innovate as it adds new chapters to its story.

These trains operate as express trains through downtown Dallas and will not board or deboard passengers at Pearl/Arts District, St. Paul, Akard, West End, EBJ Union, Convention Center or Cedars stations. Look for the trains with the destination sign SPECIAL on the train. These special Red Line trains do not serve Fair Park Station.

Special direct bus shuttle to the Fair will be operated from these stations: Victory (Green), CityLine/Bush (Red), SMU/Mockingbird (Red, Blue), Pearl/Arts District (Red, Blue, Green) and Trinity Mills (Green). After the game, DART will have buses available for your return trip along Parry Ave. in front of Fair Park Station. The post-game buses will serve Pearl/Arts District, Victory and EBJ Union stations. If you took the special bus service from CityLine/Bush, SMU/Mockingbird or Trinity Mills stations, return to those stations by train.

TRE passengers have two options for transferring: 1. Transfer to the Green Line circulator at EBJ Union Station to complete your trip to the fairgrounds OR 2. Transfer to a shuttle bus at Victory Station to continue your trip to the fairgrounds. After the game, remember to go back to the station where you arrived to return to your starting location. If you arrived by bus, DART will have buses available for your return trip along Parry Ave. in front of Fair Park Station. The post-game buses will serve Pearl/Arts District, Victory and EBJ Union stations.

Be sure to have your pass available for inspection or have your GoPass ticket activated and ready to display.

What makes DART an "employer of choice" to you?

"What makes DART the employer of choice is the career opportunities. At most departments you must have 5 to 7 years on just to be considered for specialized positions. At DART after 2 years, you are eligible for most positions. The experience you get at DART is unprecedented. This paired with my fellow officers makes for a long, exciting career."

- Police Officer Kristopher Stewart
