This evening Dalton Fire Department was dispatched to River St in Dalton for smoke coming from the rear of a residence, possible structure fire. Dalton Fire responded and upon arrival and scene size up, entry was gained to the residence with smoke alarms sounding and the first alarm was struck. A quick knock down was made of fire found on the second floor, and the fire was contained to a bed room. We would like to thank our mutual aid partners. Pittsfield Fire Department I.A.F.F 2647, Windsor Fire Department, Hinsdale Fire Department, Dalton Police Department ,Dalton Dispatch, County Ambulance, Massachusetts State police. The fire is under investigation at this time. No Fire Fighter or civilian injuries were reported.

A Message from the Fire Chief

Members of our community,

I am writing to inform you of an upcoming Commissioners’ meeting at which our department will present the findings of our recently completed Fire Department Building Needs Assessment, being held at the Dalton Fire District located at 20 Flansburg Avenue on Tuesday September 1st. at 6:30.

This assessment provides an important and comprehensive look at our current facility, the needs of our personnel, and our ability to continue providing the level of emergency service our community deserves. It also identifies the challenges and limitations associated with our existing building and outlines the facility needs required to support the department into the future.

While our firefighters remain committed to serving this community to the best of our ability, our facility must keep pace with the demands of modern emergency response. A safe, functional, and appropriately designed fire station is not simply a benefit to the department—it is an investment in public safety and the future of our community.

At this meeting, we will share the assessment's findings and discuss the path forward toward an updated facility that can better serve our residents, our firefighters, and the community as a whole. We need your support.

Moving forward with a facility that meets the community's needs will require thoughtful discussion, community engagement, and a shared commitment to public safety. We are proud to serve this community, and we believe our firefighters deserve a facility that allows them to do their jobs safely and effectively—and our residents deserve a facility capable of supporting the emergency services they rely upon.

We look forward to sharing this assessment with you and beginning an important conversation about the future of our fire department. Please join us at the upcoming Commissioners’ meeting and show your support for the future of our community's fire service.

The Dalton Fire Department extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of FF/ paramedic Niles Lavalley following his untimely passing.
Niles was a valued member of the Dalton Fire District, and we are grateful for the time he dedicated to serving our community. He will be remembered and deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.

The members of the Dalton Fire Department send our deepest regards for the passing of Fitchburg fire department Deputy chief Patrick PJ Roy

We were devastated to learn that Fitchburg Fire Department and Ashby Fire Department Deputy Chief Patrick "PJ" Roy passed away. Among all his other strengths, PJ was a passionate advocate for firefighter cancer prevention and early detection. He was an instrumental figure in the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy's cancer program and taught hundreds of awareness courses to new and veteran firefighters through the years. In 2019, he was honored at the Firefighter of the Year Awards for his immense contributions to this cause. Our hearts are with the Roy family, his brothers and sisters at Fitchburg FD and the MFA, and all who knew and loved him.

This week's heat wave has brought some dangerously hot weather. If you're using an air conditioner to stay cool, remember that ACs and other heavy appliances should always be plugged directly into a wall outlet -- not an extension cord or power strip. And if it's too hot at home, please hit a cooling center in your community. Remember to check on vulnerable family, friends, and neighbors!

Yesterday afternoon (5/20/26), the Dalton Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a party experiencing a medical emergency on the Appalachian Trail. The individual was located approximately two miles from the Gulf Road trailhead.

DFD personnel responded with D5 and a UTV'S to access the remote location. The Cheshire Fire Department was also requested to assist from the Cheshire side of the trail. Additional mutual aid was provided by the Pittsfield Fire Department, Lanesborough Fire Department, Windsor Fire Department, Hinsdale Fire Department, Life Net Helicopter of New York, Northern Berkshire EMS, Dalton Police Department, and the Berkshire County Fire Coordinator.
Due to the challenging terrain, the extrication took approximately 90 minutes to complete.

The Dalton Fire Department would like to thank all of our mutual aid partners for their teamwork and support during this incident. We also extend our appreciation to the dispatchers at the Dalton Communication Center and Berkshire RECC for their coordination and assistance.
