Update: The Army Captain That Became a Marine Lance Cpl.

Nicholas Brooklier had already accomplished what many servicemen spend an entire career pursuing. Commissioned through Army ROTC at Washington State University in 2018, he served as an Army transportation and logistics officer and eventually earned the rank of captain. But Brooklier felt his Army career was no longer fulfilling, and rather than leave military service for the civilian world, he made an extraordinary decision: he voluntarily gave up his commission and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps as a recruit. At 29 years old, he willingly started over at the bottom, accepting the enormous reduction in rank and pay that came with becoming a Marine private first class. His motivation was simple—he wanted to earn the Eagle, Globe and Anchor and believed his time in uniform was not over.

Brooklier arrived at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego in January 2024 and endured the same demanding recruit training as every other recruit. He completed the Crucible, earned the title of United States Marine, and graduated on April 26, 2024, as Pfc. Nicholas Brooklier. His decision was never simply about changing branches. Brooklier said that if he eventually became a Marine officer, he wanted first to understand what it meant to be an enlisted Marine and experience the Corps from the ground up. After boot camp, he reported to the School of Infantry-West at Camp Pendleton to become an infantryman.

And Brooklier followed through. By May 2025, the former Army captain had been promoted to Lance Cpl. Nicholas Brooklier and was serving as an infantry Marine with Animal Company, Battalion Landing Team 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. Marine Corps photography documented him in Okinawa participating in a simulated raid, working alongside other infantry Marines and serving as a machine gunner. The man who once wore an Army captain's bars had deliberately traded them for the chevrons of a Marine lance corporal—and instead of taking the easy path out of military service, he chose to start over, earn his place in the Corps, and serve where he had always wanted to be: with the infantry.

“Retreat? Hell, We Just Got Here!”

Today, we remember the legacy of Marines who fought at the Battle of Belleau Wood during World War I, helping to cement the Corps' reputation as the world's premier fighting force.

During the intense battle, the 4th Marine Brigade, comprised of the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments, and the 6th Machine Gun Battalion, fought aggressively through the wheat fields and woodlands in France, helping to stop a major German advance toward Paris in 1918. The Battle of Belleau Wood became a major turning point for the Corps, providing Marines with experience in large scale operations.

Legend has it that Marines were later called Teufel Hunden ("Devil Dogs" in German) due to the relentless tenacity while taking enemy positions during the battle. Because of the Marines’ unwavering commitment, the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments were awarded the French Croix de Guerre, an award presented to individuals or units for acts of valor and bravery on the battlefield.

Semper Fidelis.
