DEP declares a statewide Code Red 🔴 Air Quality Action Day for particulate matter (PM2.5) for Thursday, July 16, 2026.

Wildfire smoke from Canada and Minnesota will be entering Pennsylvania’s northernmost counties and pushing into southern counties Wednesday afternoon into Thursday, creating Code Red concentrations of PM2.5.

Residents and businesses within the Air Quality Alert areas are strongly encouraged to voluntarily help reduce fine particulate matter air pollution by:

- Avoiding the use of gas-powered lawn and garden equipment;
- Reducing or eliminating fireplace and wood stove use; and
- Avoiding the open burning of leaves, trash, and other materials

Residents are strongly encouraged to check www.airnow.gov for current conditions in their area.

Dalton Borough Residents
Notice: A Solicitation permit was issued for Luke Branson to solicit on behalf of Flex Power, a solar panel sales company. Mr. Branson was issued Permit #1-26 valid from 7/14/26 - 7/28/26 and is required to produce if requested.
As of now, this is the ONLY active solicitation permit issued. Any other individuals soliciting should be reported to the Dalton Borough Police Department at 570-563-2330 or 570-342-9111 (non-emergent dispatch).

To stay safe while enjoying fireworks, always prioritize safety by using them outdoors, keeping a safe distance, and having water nearby. Never point fireworks at people, and never let children handle them. Always follow local laws and use fireworks as intended.

Here's a more detailed breakdown of firework safety tips:

Before Lighting:

Location: Only use fireworks outdoors in a clear, open area away from buildings, vehicles, dry grass, and other flammable materials.

Legality: Check local laws and regulations regarding fireworks. Some areas prohibit the use of certain types of fireworks.

Age Restrictions: Never allow children to handle fireworks. Adult supervision is crucial, especially for sparklers, which can reach high temperatures.

Preparation: Keep a bucket of water, a garden hose, or a fire extinguisher nearby in case of emergencies.

Eye Protection: Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from debris.

Read Instructions: Carefully read and follow the instructions on each firework packaging.

Alcohol and Drugs: Avoid using fireworks while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

During Lighting:
• One at a Time: Light only one firework at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting.
• Never Lean Over: Never lean over a firework while lighting it. Use a long-handled lighter or punk to ignite the fuse at arm's length and then move away quickly.
• Never Point: Never point fireworks at anyone, including pets or other people.
• No Containers: Avoid lighting fireworks in metal or glass containers, as they can explode unexpectedly.

After Lighting:

Duds: Never attempt to relight a firework that does not ignite on the first try. Wait at least 20 minutes, then soak it in water for a few hours before discarding.

Soak and Dispose: Soak all used fireworks in water for a few hours before discarding them in a trash can.

Distance: Maintain a safe distance from others while fireworks are being used. For ground-based fireworks, keep at least 35 feet away; for aerial fireworks, maintain a distance of at least 150 feet.
